around 6/7 months, and it's just been a few here and there such as: Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Eat (that was the first one), More, Up, Down, and Milk.
We haven't been consistent with it, but will start up again. He does sign eat to us fairly often.

I started signing for milk and saying milk whenever I sat down to nurse him when he was about 6 months old. I can't remember exactly when he started signing for it but I think it was before 8 months old. We also taught him more and all done. He couldn't quite do those two correctly so he made his own up and still continues to use his own signs for those.
With DS, we didn't start signing until we took a Gymboree class when he was 11mos. It took him about 1.5 mos to start signing and once he did, he was an explosion of signs.
With DD, we started signing at 9 mos and it took her about 1 month to start signing. She doesn't know as many as DS did but I don't think I work on it as much w/her.
What resources for signing have you used? I've seen some animated gifs of signs on a few websites but I feel like there must be better quality information/videos out there. I feel like Max already has some word recognition (milk, dipey, etc) so I'd like to start adding the visuals soon.

This- we started with "milk" and "all done" at 6m because we would use them the most (milk to nurse and "all done" after everything- diaper change, nursing, playing, nose suctioning, etc.). We only just last week started with other signs- "eat", "drink", "sleep", "dog", "hot" etc. Really it took a long time for US to get adjusted to signing everything. He's catching on super fast, we're the slowpokes!

i have a friend who did signing with her little girl very successfully that recommended the 'baby signs' book to me
I haven't started signing with DD yet but I used a few signs in another job I did and one mom had a sign book called something like baby signs and some of the sign weren't the same as ASL.
So be careful about where you get your signs from. I'm sure that your LO will only need them for a short time. The little boy I was working with was at risk of not talking so I wanted to make sure he was using ASL
ASL has their own website with signs. We use that for signs that DD's Baby Signing Time or regular Signing Time don't teach. The videos we started at about 7 months and she started signing back after a month or two. Now she uses SO many signs! DS will definitely use the videos too, as well as observe us since we use a ton of signs around the house now.

well, i started signing 'milk', 'more', and 'all done' with him around 4 months. but since he started talking at 6 months the signing didn't really take hold. he'll still sign all done and more as he's saying them, but when he started talking so early i didn't move forward with signing as much as i wanted to.
We were never really consistent with teaching her signs, but day care is! DD is 14 months and signs please (every time she wants something and points, we say please and she signs it - TOO cute ), thank you, eat and milk. Milk is the best because she she is losing it she can still sign milk and I know right away to nurse her. So I guess school started at 7 or 8 months and they just took hold big time recently.
And with the delivery trifecra of one twin vaginal, one c-section with general anesthesia for twin B, Spencer and Sidney joined us at 35 weeks exactly on June 18.
Did it when we started solids - a bit past 5 months - we started with 'eat' and 'more'. It just seemed easiest - before that, generally my hands were full when I was talking with him.

When I worked in Montessori day care I was a 6 week-2 year teacher and we used them with anyone who could sit up and engage with us, so pretty much 4 or 5 months and on.
