Has anyone had any testing done by your dr to see if they can find out why you m/c? I've had 2 now with no live births, and my dr wants to talk about testing. I was just wondering what the extent is and if anyone had any luck with finding out what was wrong?
I have mixed feelings...I really don't want anything to be wrong with me, but at the same time, if it means a healthy baby after 9 months of pg, then that sounds great...
TIA
Re: Testing?
Yes, I have. I've only had this one loss, but I figured if they found some reason maybe we could do something about it next time and if they didn't I could (ideally) find some comfort in the idea that this was a fluke and it won't happen again.
Well, they found something. They learned the baby was missing part of her second X chromosome. She had something called Turner's Syndrome. 10 percent of miscarriages occur from this, maybe more since a lot of people don't test until the third time. Basically, if she had lived she would have more than likely been a very sick little girl - heart conditions, other organ issues, possible deformities that would have been it difficult for her to do stuff, etc. Oh, and it is something that only affects girls so that baby would have been a girl.
The likelihood that it would happen again is 0. There is no reason for it really. It just happens sometimes.
I'd love to tell you it all made me feel better, but it hasn't. Now that I know she would have been a girl I spend my time trying not to think about what I lost in details - pink dresses, ponytails, rocking her to sleep, getting her in the night when she has a nightmare, first boyfriends, prom, etc. I actually think I am worse now. I am trying to find someway to use it as a positive and think it will calm me the next time around. No luck with this so far.
All this being said, if I miscarry again, we will test again just to make sure it isn't this again.
At my Dr.'s office, they said they usually do the full work-up (including millions of labwork, hsg procedure etc...) after three m/cs. But they said it's not fair to make you go through three, so after two my Dr. offered me to do any of the work up I wanted. So since I've had to do tons of labwork (for my D&C and check hcg levels) last month, I threw in some labs here and there. So I've had some of the more common tests. They said I could do chromosome testing but it's very expensive so I have to check with my insurance and if I want it, then to call them to order the labwork. I still have yet to do that though, I've been lazy! I think testing for some of the common ones like MTHFR wouldn't hurt and hopefully your insurance covers it. Good luck!
