PCOS/High Testosterone/Androgen

Anyone have PCOS accompanied with a high testosterone level? My doctor diagnosed me with this just weeks apparently before our BFP. My doctor said high testosterone will not harm the baby but I've read some not so positive things. I need to STOP reading however I want to be well informed too. Anyone dealing with this?

Re: PCOS/High Testosterone/Androgen

  • My OB was just starting to talk about PCOS (after a few very large, very painful cysts) right before I got my first BFP. Obviously, I was ovulating though, so it may not have been PCOS related. I do not have a lot of the symptoms of PCOS (weight issues, heavy bleeding, etc.), but I DO have very high testosterone/androgen levels. It manifests mostly as hair growth. It's very embarrassing and annoying.

It has had no effect on my pregnancies. I had a very successful pregnancy with my son, and am now having an uneventful pregnancy again. The only thing I notice related is my hair growth is OUT OF CONTROL.

I think after this pregnancy, I'm finally going to seek medical help for it. It's so embarrassing to have a chin full of hair, super long side burns, etc. I feel like I spend so much time "taking care of it" - and people often ask if I have bruises on my chin (uh, no that would be a 5 o'clock shadow!). I'm not sure what can be done. I respond very poorly to estrogen (like in Birth Control Pills)...

But anyway, no effects on the pregnancy. I am having another boy (thank goodness...I'd be sad to have a little girl who might have to deal with this one day!)...

  • I also have PCOS and was seeing a RE due to the PCOS to conceive this baby. So far everything has been just fine with the pregnancy. My Dr. who is a specialist never made any indication of there being a worry due to my levels. I have the same problems as the ladies above with hair and it's the most horrible thing ever! I have weight issues too but my weight is like a roller coaster, it's up and down so much! I don't think you have anything to worry about. You could ask your Dr if you were worried, but since they didn't seem concerned I would stop reading! It's VERY dangerous during a pregnancy to read too much :)
