1st Trimester

Question re 1st OB appt

I had my 1st u/s last Monday, and I have my 1st OB appointment tomorrow, 5/17.

Even though I saw a hb last week, will the OB check for a hb or do anything to check on the baby tomorrow?  I know to expect a Pap, blood draws, urine, questions, etc., but will I get any more info about my little peanut at the appointment?

 I hope so!

Re: Question re 1st OB appt

  • There probably won't be much else.  The doctor will answer any questions you have, so take a list.  If you're already had an ultrasound, the doctor probably won't do another one because they don't want to expose the baby to unnecessary ultrasound waves.

I had a nurse visit right after I had my BFP, and she had my bloodwork done so it would be ready when the doctor saw me.  My doctor does the ultrasound himself, so at my first appointment, I had that and a pap smear, pelvic exam, and breast exam.

  • I doubt your OB would check for the hb with the doppler or u/s. They will pretty much do the pap, give you the order for the bloodwork, ask you if you have questions and have you schedule another appt in 4 weeks. The OB appts in the beginning are pretty uneventful.
  • Unlikley they'll check for a HB until week 12 or 13. Plan for weight, pee in a cup, blood pressure, perhaps a pap, and then answering questions.

For me, they didn't even try to find the heartbeat with a doppler until 11 weeks. Before then it's really hard to find.
