Hi!!! i'm having baby #2 and i'm very interested in cloth diapering.
i posted on the pre-school board and some ladies mentioned to come here for advice and also mentioned that prefolds and covers were the easiest way to start on cloth diapering, can someone guide me in the right direction for this, i dont have a ton of money to spend up front but i'm willing to make the efford because i know in the long run they do end up saving you money.
now, i looked at pics of prefolds and they looked like some i bought for ds (at walmart) when he had really bad diaper rash as an infant (i never used covers just the cloth on him to help his butt breathe and well of course i had to change him everytime he got wet), anyways can i use those or do i need special ones??
i would really appreciate if someone can post some links on what the covers are that i would need in the beginning.
does anyone know how much money do you save by using cloth? my dh wants to know that. thanks for educating me in this subject i really appreciated!
Re: a cloth diaper question, please help me!
Hi,
Start here and click on the CD tag on the left. A lot of the options are presented there so you can get an idea of what's available.
Most people recommend the prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers because they are very absorbent and work better than the thin ones you usually find at big box stores.
As for covers, I really like Thirsties covers, and I don't find them terribly expensive.
I think the link I have above gives some cost comparisons. The other things to keep in mind are that you can buy gently used CDs (or sometimes CDs that have been prepped but never used), and you can also sell CDs when you're done with them if they're in good shape. I bought most of my stash used.

Even if you don't go with the Green Mountain prefolds, you don't want the Gerber ones from Walmart. They are worlds different and really only good for burp cloths. You want to look for DSQ (diaper service quality) prefolds. GMDs are nice because they are super absorbent, soft, and come in many sizes so you get a good fit without bulk.
I love the Thirsties Duo Wraps. They come in 2 sizes so that is all you have to buy through PLing. They are super adjustable. Since they are a popular choice, they'll also be easy to re-sell when you're done.
You may want to consider getting a couple of AIO or pockets like the popular Bumgenious 3.0 onesize which will fit at around 10-12 lbs. They are great for nighttime (you can double stuff them for more absorbency), have stay dry liners, good for trips out, and good for dads and babysitters.
Big E (6) & Little E (2.5)
I second all of this. Also I found jillian's drawers "new to cloth" section to be very helpful. There is so much info out there on CDing and the way they have it organized is very easy to digest. Here is their rundown on the cost comparison.
Lurk on these boards and you will learn a lot!
I also really liked www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com for lots of good info. The jillian's drawers website has a great intro to cding as well.
P.S. I got my prefolds on Little Lion's (they were seconds) and are great!
Oh yeah! The only thing I paid full price for in my newborn stash were the prefolds. (greenmountain) Everything else I purchased on hyena cart or from the gently used section of jillians drawers.
Totally lurk, go to a couple cloth diaper online stores and sign up for alert e-mails for when they have sales... Also, https://www.theecofriendlyfamily.com/ has a lot of great resources (and prizes!)
