Question about contractions because I just don't know

Sorry in advance because this is probably a really stupid question but what do contractions feel like? I assume they feel like cramps but I'm not sure. Today and yesterday I've had cramps kind of like period cramps and I also feel them in my lower back. I remember a couple of months ago I had this same feeling and I asked my doctor about it and she just told me I need to drink more water. They're not real consistant and I don't have them all day so I don't know if maybe they're just BH contractions.

For me, my labors have always started out with contractions that feel like bad period cramps along with belly tightening. If you're just having the cramps then it's not a contraction.

Contractions do feel like menstrual cramps.  BH don't hurt, they may feel uncomfortable but not painful.

Dehydration can cause contractions, try drinking a large glass of water, if that doesn't make them stop (within about 30 minutes) you should call your dr.

What I was told by my nurse is that when your belly is as hard as your forehead, that = BH/contractions.  BH are tightening w/o pain, contractions are tightening with the crampy feeling.
