Fifths Disease

Just found out my niece has Fifths Disease...and we were with them 2 weeks ago - when she had just started with a cold and runny nose, fever...  now today she was throwing up and had the rash yesterday and today.  So her contagious period would have been when we were with them 2 weeks ago. My daughter didn't get sick with it, so that's good...but I'm concerned about me being pregnant and having been exposed to it.  Anyone else ever been exposed? I called my OB - and of course she is off on Fridays... the good thing is I have an appointment on Monday, so I guess they will just run some extra bloodwork to test for it.  awesome.

Re: Fifths Disease

  • I was exposed to it.  Nothing happened.  The nurse told me there is nothing that can be done.  You just have to watch for a fever and rash.  The only thing they could have done was to test  to see if I was immune to it or not.  I never got tested since I had already been exposed to it.  The nurse said it's not as scary as what some people think

  • It's not as bad as 'they' say.  About 50% of people are already immune (your Dr. will do a blood test to see).  If you aren't immune, you had to have actually caught it.  Then even if you did catch it, it may not have passed onto the baby.  And, even if it did pass onto the baby, it's not definite that something could go wrong.  So, get tested, but don't worry.
  • I was exposed when my neighbor got it during my last pregnancy.  The nurse at my OB said that I was probably exposed to it as a kid  and so I was probably immune to it and shouldn't worry.  But if that's the case, then why should anyone worry if apparently we have all been exposed to it?  I thought it was weird that the nurse assumed that I had had it as a kid.  I told her that since I was a teacher, I had had several students over the years who've had it, so she said that's probably extra assurance.

I'm a pediatric dermatology PA, so as you can imagine, I see it ALL.THE.TIME! With DD, I had titers done for it (Parvovirus B19), as well as for Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease (coxsackievirus) and I was immune to both. My OB said taht most adults are immune since they are both very common viruses. Hence the name Fifth's Dease...Fifth most common viral rash in kids! I wouldn't worry about it!

  • I was exposed to it last time I was pregnant.  Two days after my BFP I found out my nephew had it and I was with him the day before.  My dr. sent me for a blood test and I was immune.  I wouldn't worry too much.  I'm sure it's fine
