Our friend has taken a course in car seat installation for our job and is installing it for us, but she's not an official "inspector" so I figured I might stop at a fire station and have them take a look and give me the thumbs up. Just in case.

I voted Special Snowflake.  My best friend's husband is a state trooper, so he's going to help DH install it this weekend.

the place that does it around here says it takes two hours...no thank you. I nannied for babies/young kids for a long time so I am an old hat at installing car seats and booster seats. Also, I read the manuals of my car and the car seats.

No. We didn't get DD's inspected either. I read the manual for both the car and the car seat and installed them ourselves. It really isn't that hard. Also, our hospital checks them before you leave with the baby, ours was installed perfectly.

 I took a car seat safety class when DD was in the NICU to pass the time at the hospital. I know I can do it right.

Anyone in NYC who wants it done- The Department of Transportation has free car seat inspection the 2nd Saturday of every month at places around the city.  I can give you the info if you need it.  They installed both my infant and convertible one and it took only a few minutes.  Just e-mail me at  jhoexter24@aol.com and I'll give you the info.

I had mine installed at the Police station so they certify/inspect it right then.

 No,   My dad is a police officer and I'll have him check it. Also - the hospital will check it before we are allowed to leave so I'll let them do it too.

The closest place to do an inspection to me was 40 minutes away in a direction I don't go so it wasn't exactly convenient.

We went to the traffic division for both my car and my husband's car.  This is our first baby, so I just wanted to make sure that we hadthis covered.  I think I would have felt fine if we just did it ourselves too.
