WDYT? Co-bedding with a dog

H and I have to buy a new furnace.  To save money, we thought we would forego the furnace this winter and just put our shih tzu in the crib with the baby to keep it warm.  We would keep our boxer for our own bed to keep us warm.  WDYT?

  • Hmmm - I have been looking at a big crib, I'm sure our german shepherd could fit in there with LO...

  • I was thinking the space heater thing too.  Just right up inside the crib though, so the baby can cuddle with it.

Or you could just go the cheap route and pile a dozen quilts on top (make sure to leave an air hole).

  • OOh. This is a good idea. We should do this with the Bassett!

You are so lucky you have dogs that will fit in with the babies!  My greyhound is super warm, but too big to fit Sad  And here I was thinking we could save $$ on heat.  I wonder if I could get the cat to stay in the crib and the dog can sleep with us?

  • Will this work just as well with a cat??  What about a cat AND a space heater?  Yeah, I think that'll work just fine.

ETA: Oh oh!  I've got it.  The fur might be inconvenient so how about just swaddling with a heating pad turned up to the highest setting.

  • Wow - ummmmm I wasn't expecting that when I opened the post.  Why on earth would you put your dog in a crib?   Yes they are warm but they will not keep the baby that warm.  take care of your kid and fork over the money for heat.  Try to save somewhere else like cable or out to eat.  You run a risk as to whether or not the dog would even get along with the baby or wouldn't want to mark its territory in the crib.  Eww.  I love my dogs, and I do sleep with them.  As far as putting them in a crib with my baby - no thank you.

Don't forget you can turn the oven on and leave the door open and you can always let the dryer just vent into the house instead of outside Wink

  • Great idea. Between a pit bull and a lab, not only will DC be warm, but s/he will be entertained for hours so I can surely get lots of beauty sleep.

I have greyhounds too!  Can you imagine if they "fluffed" the crib they way they fluff their beds?  I think the cat would work well.  Especially because they like to sleep on people's heads.  Very cozy.

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Wait are you serious?  You are asking us if we think it's a good idea for you to put a dog in a crib with a baby?  NO I don't think that's okay.  I don't mean to sound like I'm flaming, but that is not safe at all.  The dog could accidentally smother your baby, scratch him, bite him, you never know.  If you are having trouble getting your home heated, maybe there are grants or programs in your area that can help.  I know where I live, people can donate electricity or gas to people who need it.  I would look into that before putting a dog in a crib.

  • LilM-

Forget about the dog and don't bother looking into any government assistance mumbo jumbo- take a page from bums.

Get a metal trash can, build a small fire in it, and put it in the crib next to the baby! :-) He or She won't be able to rub it's hands briskly over it for a while, but I'm sure the radiant heat will work wonders ;-) Bonus- you can burn the dirty diapers! Perfect!

Great point about the grant, the OP should totally look into that. If it's available she could get the money, STILL have her dog in the crib, not spend the money on heat, and make bank! Infact, if she spent that money on dog food it would, in essence, be paying for heat.
