UGH baby brain

I took over the finaces from DH shortly after we were married because well basically he sucked at them.  I have worked really hard and basically got us (mainly him) out of about ?10,000 debt in 2 years.  We will have the last CC paid of in 2 months time then it is just the car at the end of the year and of course our house.  I have also managed to get some savings going we don't have a six month nest egg yet but working towards it.  All of our bills including my CC bill which I pay off each month come at the begining of the month.  Except DH CC which still has the balance on it I can't pay that until after the 10th because of the billing cycle.  So last month after the 10th I went online to make a payment (I don't have a direct debit set up because some months I can manage to pay more and don't want the hassle of two payments) and thought I sent off ?400 to DH CC.  This month his statement has just arrived and I open it and in all caps it says no payment was recieved for the last billing cycle.  I panic and go running online to check what was up as I had a very clear memory of paying it as we had extra money to put towards it and I was all excited.  Turns out I made two payments to my CC by mistake and have an extra ?400 sitting on my CC I had not noticed and now we have to pay a late fee.  I am also hoping this will not impact DHs credit rating for missing a payment.  I had to make to call of shame to DH and explain it to him.  Luckily he was really good about it and said everyone make mistakes and praised me for how in the last few years I have managed to basially get us out of debt, I just feel totally stupid.

  • Maybe you should call the CC company and explain to them that you have baby brain and tell them what happened. You might get lucky and have them take off the late fee. You never know.

This, it's worked for me and as long as you don't have a history of skipping payments they might take off the fee.

  • Yup, I would definitely call.  More often then not they will waive the fee and it won't show on your credit report, as long as you don't have a history of this, which it sounds like you don't.

BTW, Great Job on managing your bills!  I'd love it if you would do mine! ;)

  • Will have to try calling CC on Monday.  I know that in the last two years since I have been doing it there have been no missed payments, not sure about before that when DH paid his own bills.
