1st Trimester

Brown spotting (TMI)

I woke up this morning with some brown spotting...nothing red-not even pinkish, just brownish discharge (I know, TMI)....has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure what to think..

I had a miscarriage back in November, and that started off like a regular period but then progressively got worse throughout the day. This has just been some scant spotting throughout the day-not even enough to warrant a pad or a pantyliner. Any ideas?? Is this normal?? TIA!

Re: Brown spotting (TMI)

  • Brown spotting is caused by old blood.  No blood is good news, but brown is much better than red (fresh blood).  If you have not yet had an ultrasound, you need to get one asap to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.  All blood should be reported to your doctor.

  • Oh - sorry - I forgot to add that it is also a good sign that you aren't spotting a lot.

I had that and got checked out.  I would just call the doctor.  On a good note, they took my blood and the next day did an ultrasound which was exciting.  I go back this morning for my update one.  GL!

  • I had something similar around 5-6 weeks.  I called my OB and they brought me in for an u/s.  Everything looked great.  My midwife said that implantation continues for a while as they placenta completes its implantation process and that what I was seeing was nothing to worry about.  It stopped shortly thereafter and hasn't started up again since.

I'd still report it to your doctor so they can be sure your cervix is closed and there are no indicators of other problems.  GL!

  • When I was pregnant with DS eight years ago, I had brown spotting throughout off and on and my OB said that it was normal. This time around,  I called the doctor when I found the brown spotting because it was followed by pinkish spotting and a mixture of both. Still waiting to hear back from the nurse, not sure if they will bring me in for an u/s since I'm only five weeks but I'm hoping they will at least do bloodwork to put my mind at ease.
  • I had brown discharge for about 2 weeks starting at 6w3d.  I had to use a pad.  I called my Dr.'s office the first day it happened.  They weren't concerned, but had me come in for bloodwork and u/s anyways to be safe.  Saw a baby and hb!  I stopped having the discharge about 2 days ago.  The brown spotting is pretty normal, but you should let your Dr's office know just to be on the safe side.
2nd ectopic resulted in loss of tube. HSG revealed remaining tube is "severely torqued".
