1st Trimester

There is nothing quite like...

getting a phone call from a high risk OB about making an appointment, when you weren't even aware that you were referred to one in the first place.

Thank you, dear doctors office, for that lovely surprise. We will be having a nice chat tomorrow morning at my appointment.

Backstory: My first thought was about my ultrasound last Friday. There was blood around the amniotic sac. I haven't heard from my new doc, yet, about the ultrasound so when the lady on the phone said it was for a high risk OB for an appointment, I started freaking out. It turns out I was referred to them because of my congenital heart defect... even though I wasn't referred to one for my first pregnancy through the same office? So confused... and still slightly panicky...

  • If you don't mind me asking...what is your heart defect? I have tetralogy of fallot and my cardiologist told me I had to be seen by a high risk OB. This is my first pregnancy so I'm a little scared and worried how my heart will handle it even though my cardiologist said I should be fine.

Ironically enough, I have tetrology of fallot as well. I had surgery to repair it when I was 18 months old, and have been pretty problem free since then.

They made me take antibotics during labor, and they really wanted me to have an epidural (less stress on your heart), but other then that there was nothing different with my first pregnancy.

  • Wow your one of the lucky ones. I had my pulmonary valve replaced at infancy and again at 14 yrs old. They always told me I will probably have another replacement sometime in my 20's... well....I turn 28 at the end of the month and so far so good. My cardiologist doesn't suspect surgery for at least 3-5 years. I have a great cardiologist that specializes in adults with heart defects so when we told her we wanted to get pregnant she had me do a bunch of tests and then gave us the "green light" for one year. Good thing we finally got our BFP after 10 months or I would have had to redo all the cardio tests.

Do you regularly see a cardiologist? Did you have any heart related issues with your first pregnancy- i.e Shortness of breath, palpatations, high BP due to increased blood volume on your heart?

I'm glad I found you on here.Big Smile You may be my "go to" person about pregnancy with heart issues if your ok with that.
