Reusable Diapers....

My husband and I are thinking of venturing into the reusable/cloth diaper venture when our 'nugget' arrives. This is our first child and we both work so is this a venture worth taking?? Any suggestions on the easiest way to clean, store, and any other info would be great!

Thanks :)

  • The Eco friendly moms and the AP board are your best bets for good info.

We seriously considered cloth diapering, but we didn't have a washer and dryer available at our apartment and I didn't want to drive to a laundrymat to wash them.

The only issue you might have is that many day cares will not accept them, so you will have to use disposables while they are there.

  • We are using a diaper service :-) Same one my Mom used with all 4 of us. $16.50 for 80 diapers/ week, yes, please.

  • I'm thinking of using a cloth diaper service for the first three months while I am home with the baby. Then, I will reduce the diaper service to enough cloth diapers per week for just evenings and weekends since day care will use disposables.

I hesitate to invest in a full stash of cloth since it's an expensive investment up front if they won't be able to use cloth at day care. I feel like a cloth service/disposable combo will work for me. LO will also get the benefits of cloth and I won't have to worry about all that laundry.

  • We CDed DS since 18 months, DD since she was a newborn, and will be cloth diapering #3 from the start as well. A great way to save even more money.....buy used (and then sell when you're done) on DiaperSwappers (or swapspot on this site). I was able to CD my daughter for the first 4 months for only the cost of shipping and paypal fees, so about $30. There is no way I could have bought 4 mo worth of disposables for $30!

My kiddos do at home daycare two days a week and have to wear disposables, but we still see a considerable savings.

    This is a great program!

  • Definitely check out the Eco board.  I didn't do cloth with DS#1 because I was too overwhelmed about getting started since I didn't know anyone else using cloth but I bit the bullet with DS#2 and we are a cloth diaper family now and forever more :)

  • My husband and I got the bum genious diapers when my LO was about 2 -3 mo old. I LOVE them. Now that she's 9 mo I actually use nighttime disposables just for night... but that's 1 a day... and I do use disposable at this point in time, for daycare (I don't plan on working too much longer bc I'm preggo with 2nd) bc she is a mom and has quite a few kids... disposables are just easier for her. But no problems with stink... I got a sprayer that I hooked on to the toilet (REALLY easy... I did it) and just rinse after I'm done changing and throw them in the laundry basket... I usually do a wash just with my other clothes (unless it's a white blouse or something JUST in case) every 2-3 days.  The initial investment for me was... I think $120 for 6 diapers and the sprayer.  YOu just need to know about how many your LO goes through a day. I would say when they're LITTLE little :) disposables are easier just because you're going through 10+ a day for the first month or so! Hope that helps!
