tell me about an HSG

My RE says that's the next step in the process. Can you tell me about your experience? Major side effects? Was it painful? Thanks!

Re: tell me about an HSG

  • Hi, I have had 2.. They say to expect minor cramping during the procedure, esp when they insert the dye. Unfortunatly for me I had major cramping both times. They prescribed a valuim for my second one I think it helped my nervousness but I refused a 3rd HSG and had a sonohystogram instead. Not everyone reacts the same way, you may only have slight discomfort during the x-ray and be perfectly fine right after. I think the majority don't have to much discomfort with it. GL!!

I had one.  I found it easy and painless.  I was told to expect minor cramping and I've heard some horror stores on here so I braced myself for the worst....knowing that it is pretty quick helps though.  For me, I didn't feel a thing....not even minor cramping...and I didn't have any side effects.  So, it can definitely go either way.

It ttruly depends on the person. I had an easy time with the procedure, but had severe cramping/pain afterward. They should be able to give you pain meds if this happens. GL to you!

  • I don't want to scare you, but for me...I had a really bad experience with the aftermath of the HSG procedure.

The procedure was painless...a little uncomfortable but no biggie and my tubes were all clear.

When I got home about 20-30 minutes later, I had cramps SO bad, they made me cry and continued for hours. Called the Dr. and they called in a vicodin prescription, once that kicked in the cramps went away.  The next day, since I was in the fetal position and had spent hours this way (tightening abs too)...I couldn't get out of bed and had to call in sick to work.

I hope yours is easy and painless.  Good luck!

  • Mine was pretty uncomfortable - just while the dye was in and it was only a couple of minutes.  They said it would be like menstrual cramps - it was more painful than that for me.  I wanted to jump off the table.  But once it was over, the pain went away.  I did have some spotting afterwards.

Having a HSG made me decide that I want an epidural for childbirth.  I didn't tolerate the pain very well.

Some women have no problems with the HSG, so hopefully that will be you.

    Good luck!

  • My RE asked me to take 600mg of ibuprofen prior to my test.  I took it about an hour beforehand.  I still experienced strong cramps when the dye was inserted but that only lasted a minute.  Aside from that, it was just uncomfortable.  I spotted for a few days afterwards but had no other side effects.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! I'll be sure to take some ibuprofen beforehand. And I might ask for a pain pill or two, just in case. I'll also probably take the entire day off, so that I can hang out on the couch.
  • I took 4 advil about an hour before, but I still had painful cramping.  I wasn't in tears or anything, but they still hurt.  The whole test lasted only like 2 min.  I felt fine afterwards, and drove myself home.  I had very little spotting afterwards.

  • I had severe pains and cramps during the procedure, esp when they insert the dye.  But I was fine afterward, with minor cramping throughout the day.  It was a not so fun 30 seconds, but if you can put up with that you're in good shape :)

Yep. This to a "T". It was about 1-2 minutes of really painful cramps (they said it was because they were "widening my cervix", but once they pulled all the stuff out of me, I felt fine. I went back to work afterwards. The dye slowly leaked out of me for the next day or two, so I wore a panty liner.

Oh, I asked for a copy of my xrays afterwards. I figured it would be good to have just in case there was a mixup and they weren't sent to my RE (and it was kinda cool to see it).

  • I'm sorry to be a debbie downer but my HSG was literally the most painful thing I've ever experienced.  If I ever had to have another one I would insist on pain medication.  That said, it only lasted about 45 seconds to a minute and I was able to go to work that afternoon.  My tubes were open fwiw.

  • I didn't experience any cramping at all and it was over in 90 seconds.  A little leakage the rest of the day but other than that I couldn't even tell.  I had an RE do the HSG not a radiologist and I have heard this can make all the difference.  Good luck!

For me the worst part was inserting the tubing, after that it was just a few mild cramps. I was able to go about my day after- with a pad for leakage. I did take the suggested advil before hand.  Good luck!
