Google me this...

I am looking for the name of the harmone that is released during childbirth and BF that causes your ligaments and/or tendons to relax.  I am meeting with a spinal surgeon tomorrow and want to be able to tell him that I think this may be part of the reason why my herniated disc gets so bad after childbirth and don't want him to think I am an idiot.  I know that there has to be a correlation (had the same thing after DD was born until I quit BF her), but I need some evidence and scientific words.

Re: Google me this...

  • I don't think that is it.  I think that is the one that makes your brain love your baby:-)

That sounds more like it!  Thanks.  I wish I could find some studies on its effect on spinal cord injury.  I know there has to be some sort of correlation.  I quit BF 2 weeks ago and already feel tons better, but when I made this appointment I was still in severe pain and had been for a year, despite 3 spinal injections.  Now, I feel stupid even going, but if it is just the last spinal injection working and it wears off I am back to being stuck at home with two kids and arms that don't work.

  • I'm so sorry you were in pain..that is NO FUN with 2 small ones at home. After I had Owen I had severe pain in my shoulders (in the hospital) and struggled with it until he was well over a year old and only after cortisone shots did I feel any relief. I will tell you it was WAY more painful than labor..it is/was the worst pain I have ever been in. I literally could not lift my arms high enough to take off my shirt or to pick the kids up. I honestly would cry nearly all day and night. It robbed me of the first year of Owen's life and it still makes me sad to think about it. I have always suspected it had something to do with pregnancy hormones/childbirth but never got to the bottom of what was really going on with me. Sorry to digress but wanted to share my story because I felt like it might be similar...I hope your pain continues to improve and that this can be put behind you and get some answers!
  • THANK YOU!  I feel sometimes like I am crazy, but I have an MRI to prove I am not.  The MRI was taken when I could not use my left arm.  Then it moved to both arms, now it is mostly in my left, sometimes in my right and my neck, but considerably better than it was 2 weeks ago, which was 3 weeks after my last spinal injection ( I have had 3 in 5 months).  When I had it with DD, they treated it as a shoulder injury and sent me to PT, which was total hell on earth.  This time, at least they got the right diagnosis.  I do feel the same way.   I love my baby and I hate that when I rock him to sleep at night, all I can think about is how much pain I am in.  I feel bad for all DD misses out on too.

Childbirth doesn't have anything on this.  I give birth 5 times over this, at least you get a baby.  It is much better the last 2 weeks, since I quit BF.  Still hurts, but not with the labor pain in your arms intensity.

Medline and Pubmed are two good places to start searching for journal articles. I don't think you need to sign up to get the abstracts.
