Babies: 9 - 12 Months

constipated babe- please help!

m was having somewhat hard poops on Saturday & Sunday. Then Sunday evening she had decent but not as big as usual poop. Yesterday nothing. Just a few minutes ago she grunted for about 5 minutes & only had a poop about as big around as a silver dollar. (she always grunts but never for that long. & never has trouble pooping.)

i've tried: prunes, pears, apple juice, prune juice, massaging her tummy, bicycling her legs. i haven't tried the thermometer because the poop is hard so i didn't think it'd help. & our pedi doesn't have an after hours number.

any advice or help? wwyd?

eta: she's not overly fussy or anything.

Poor baby! I had to use a glycerine suppository on DS once. I just used half but about 10 seconds after I put it in he pooped. I guess that stimulated him enough to go. Even though he went (it was dry and hard) I put it back in since it hadn't dissolved yet and he had a good poop the next morning.

did the doc prescribe this? was it over the counter?

  • Per our pedi:   Put vaseline on the end of a q-tip, stick the tip up your LO's rear, rotate slowly until you see your LO pushing and poop start to come out.

Even if the poop is hard, this will help.  DD has the same issues that you are describing on a weekly basis and nothing else helps.

You can buy them over the counter.  My pedi only rec'd giving half to DD after she hadn't pooped for over a week.  It's kind of a last ditch effort.  If it's only been a day or so, I wouldn't use a suppository yet.

  • sometimes it takes a few days for the stuff to work.  pears didn't help my DS.  prunes/prune juice did.  When I called upset about it, the nurse said it might be uncomfortable for DS but he wasn't going to have serious health problems from it - so I think unless you're worried it can wait until the dr. opens in the morning.  did you stop giving your LO rice cereal?  That is constipating.  GL.
