not sure how much preemie stuff to buy, if any

I have no clue how big these babies will be.  At my last sono, they were in the 40th %tile, but I know you can't really rely on that.  My DS was 7lbs 11oz, but went full term, 40 weeks exact.

Should I wait until the babies get here?  I have lots of white NB onesies and side snap tees.  They are carters, so 7lbs and up.   Where do I find preemie clothes?

i would stick with nb and up.  we started using the nb stuff as soon as they came home at just under 5lbs.  sure it was a little big, but they grew into it so fast.

if you do need a few preemie things, and are in nicu, i'd just send someone to BRU to pick up a few onesies.  if babes do need nicu, hosp will clothe them.

  • Thank you!  It's good to know the NB size will work on 5 pounders.  I figure any smaller than that, they will most likely still be in the NICU anyways.

  • I figure it's summer, so you can probably get by on the little hosptial t's and swaddling if need be until you can run out and get some if needed.
  • Totally wished I would have waited...I have a lot of preemie stuff I got from friends and at consignment sales that are looking to be useless lol

  • I wouldn't buy anything until they get here.  If they need the NICU they will dress them there until you can some,  and ditto pp about newborn sizes. They grow so fast!!

  • If you do end up needing preemie clothes I found mine at burlington coat factory, tj maxx, walmart, and some at target. I had a hard time finding preemie things, my BRU did not have any! I wasn't expecting to have preemies either, but my girls came 8 weeks early and ended up being in preemie clothes until they were almost 3 months!

When my DDs first came home from the hospital and were still a little small for NB stuff (4lb12oz and 5lb14oz when they were born), I had them in 0-3 month gowns.  I know it sounds crazy, but since they were gowns, the length didn't matter and we just rolled up the sleeves some.  Plus, it made diaper changing much easier!

Also, I don't know if you are involved with a Parents of Multiples group in your area, but I know ours has a clothing closet type thing where you can borrow preemie clothes if you need them.

  • It gave me peace of mind to have some preemie clothes washed and ready just in case the babies came early or were smaller than we expected. We found it all at BRU. We haven't used any of it (three onesies, two gowns, and one sleeper for each baby), but I don't think of it as a waste of money since it eased a little concern for me.

We took the sleepers to the hospital with us for possible going home outfits, but since the newborn ones we brought were better, we gave the preemie sleepers to the hospital for any family who might need them.  I wish we had brought the rest of it to do the same.

  • I'm not purchasing any premie clothes either.  I've heard from several other MOMs that even the gerber onesies run small.  Currently at 34 weeks, A weighs in at 4lbs 15oz and the other weighs in at 4lbs 5 oz.  Was wondering how much use we'd get out of the newborn clothing.  I washed a bunch of 0-3 mth Gerber onesie and I do have a few newborn onesies if need be.  Think I'll just wait and see what happens when they get here and how big they are and just go from there.  I don't want to use all these onesies and have them only fit for a short timeframe.. I'd rather have something be alittle big (although not too big) Time will tell

  • Joey only wore NB (he was 6"12oz) for alittle bit and then was in his 0-3 months.  Addisyn just came out of her NB (she was 5"8oz). They are both 3 months now.  I had just a couple preemie but b/c someone gave them to me, but other then that I wouldn't buy to many preemie outfits at first.

  • Many of the preemie clothes at Burlington are smaller then newborn but not tiny tiny.....with the exception of Carters and Gerber. FYI Gerber cotton one pieces and onsies shrink alot even during first wash so you may get use of them in NB if you need smaller size. My girls came home at 4lb 5oz and 5lb 11oz. The smaller one was in P's for 4 weeks, the bigger one never fit in Carters preemies which only go to 5lb,but fit in the others from Burlington that go to 7 lbs.
