spotting and FREAKING OUT

I'm at work ... just went to the bathroom and had some spotting! I am absolutely freaking out and want to cry right now. I don't have any pain or cramping at all..... is this at all normal or should I be very worried???

Re: spotting and FREAKING OUT

  • Spotting is perfectly normal Kell... don't worry.

The fact that you have no pain or cramping is a good sign!!!

What color is the spotting? Light pink and brownish are okay, if it's bright red and a lot, then I would suggest going in. You can always call your dr. and ask their opinion!

ETA: saying "don't worry" is easier said than done... I know where you're coming from, since I spotted during my first pregnancy. If it continues over the weekend, I would recommend getting an appt first thing Monday, and they should check your HCG and progesterone.

  • I had brown spotting for most of my first tri with DD and everything turned out ok.  Try to stay clam and call your Doctor.  I always liked going to see him, even if it was only for peace of mind.  Hope all is well.

It's common. Call your obgyn and see what they have to say. Unless it's a bright red flow and your having alot of cramping try not to get too worked up before you talk to them.

  • When i had my daughter i BLEED not spotted for 3 months but my doc said my body had to get adjusted to the pregnancy and since its used to monthly cycles thats what it was.......when i got preggers with my son i spooted for a while here and there, just call ur doc to go in and make sure everything is ok....i wish u a happy and healthly 9 months
  • I'd give your doc a call, but please try not to assume the worst.  My doctor told me that if you're having a m/c you KNOW you're having a m/c, so I'd interpret that to mean much more than just some spotting.

Although you know that some spotting can be completely normal, I'm sure it's mortifying to experience yourself.

Just try to stay calm and talk to your doc.

T&Ps on the way to you!

  • I would call the doctor and explain the situation to her to be safe and see what she says. I don?t want to be a Debbie Downer, but with my personal situation...I started out with brownish spotting one day and then the next it was heavy bleeding and cramping...turns out I have threatened miscarriage. But I think I?m just one of those super small percents of women. I am the exception to the norm, so don?t worry, you are prob. fine. Just talk with your doc. T & P for you and keep us posted!

  • Right now its brownish.

I called my OB and the receptionist is leaving a message and having an MD call back. I have an appt tommorow night for my 1st US so clearly I will have answers then. But waiting 24 hours is TORTURE

I had a little spotting over the weekend, I asked my RE about it this morning.  They said brown and pink is fine and normal.  They said red, heavy or painful means to call them.  They said it's especially common after you use the bathroom (bm).

I'm sure everything is fine, but I know how hard it is to keep calm.  Try to relax, get some rest tonight, I'm sure it will go away.

    Good luck!

Actually it was after I did a BM.... I wiped and saw the brownish/pinkish color. Started freaking. You made me feel a bit better for now. I am stuck @ work for another 3 hours. Ug this is torture

  • I would say you're more likely to have spotting after the BM, because you're pushing a bit more than usual. One thing I always found amusing being told, is to not "bear down" or push too hard when trying to go.

Yup, this.  That's what the RE said.  The pushing brings it down.

  • Try not to worry to much. The fact that it is brown and it was after a bm should be reassuring. I brown spotted for 6 weeks and then after that still spotted only when I had a bm. Now, I just have the normal, lovely discharge!

  • Thanks girls

I guess I will just have to wait & see if it gets worse or stays the same. I really wish I was at home. I feel like I can't even focus on my patients right now

  • Sorry you are going through this.  I know its really scary.  If it stops, its probably nothing.  If it keeps going or gets to be more blood and more red, then definitely call your OB.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • I spotted for about 12 hours a week ago and my doctor gave me this stat that really helped put me at ease...4 out of 10 women who carry their babies to full term have some spotting during their first trimester. ?That's almost half of us. ?Hope everything is fine! And yes, trying to relax is much easier said than done! ?Just remember many of us have had something similar happen.?

I had the same thing at work on Thursday(you may have seen my post).  Mine was brownish as well but my OB called me in to take blood.  It may just be spotting and that is normal for some.  She made me come in last Friday for an ultrasound and I go again this Friday.  Mine pretty much stopped and I hope yours does too.  Just take it easy and rest.  Keep us posted!

  • Not to be too gross, but when it was dripping on my feet in the shower, the OB still wasn't concerned.  Apparently, I'm just a bleeder.  So, a little spotting is probably fine.  I've been spotting the entire pregnancy off and on so far and they say everything looks fine.  The good news, I've had three ultrasounds already!  Something nice to come from my panic attacks!

  • I've had red, pink, and brown spotting off and on since 6w, (I'm now 12w). I also freaked out at s1st (checking the TP every 10 min to see if it stopped). My ob did a u/s at 6w 1d and confirmed everything was fine and was able to find the hb which was reassuring. I notice when I am moving about for a long period of time (like in the mall), or walking or running too quickly that it starts. I can usually feel when the spotting is about to begin, and take that as my cue to stay off of my feet. That usually works.

I have had 3 u/s since the spotting started and everything's been fine each time. Dr. said it might be an irritated cervix that's prone to bleeding.

    GL!

  • I had spotting over the weekend too, so I know that feeling of panic and terror when you see it on the TP.  It stopped, and I hope yours does too.

Post an update when you hear back from your OB.  I know when I started spotting, I looked at all of these posts and there weren't many with an update/outcome posted.

I'm sure everything will turn out ok.

  • Good luck... I hope everything turns out okay.

  • also, have you had sex in the last couple of days?  That can cause spotting too.  Good luck!

  • I also have brown spotting. It is only about twice a day, but is scary! I just found out today that my progesterone is low and I am starting progesterone tonight. I completely understand how you feel. Let us know what happens!

Let your doctor know but it is common. When I was pregnant with my son I had spotting. Based on the color and lack of cramps my doctor said not to worry and they were right everything was fine.
