Im thinking about maybe getting one w a lid on it. My boys would love it! But the thought of it skeeves me. I just dont want it to get nasty and them get that hand, foot, mouth ulcer thing! Anybody have one? Is it covered? How often do you change the sand?
Re: Anyone have a sandbox?
We have 1 and Keira loves it, we bought it 2 years ago. Ours does have a cover. However, the cover blew off during a storm recently and the neighborhood cats had they way with it so we are cleaning it out and replacing all of the sand.
We built one since the ones you can buy are so small. Ours is 8x8 so we ordered a special cover from sandlock. Its a really nice fitted one that doesn't blow off (we originally locked down a tarp over it and it would blow away).
The kids use it daly when its nice out. It entertains them for hours. All the neighborhood kids like it to. Definitely one of the perks to having such a large one. We also have real sand that you can build castles with (not that play sand you buy at lowes).

We have a sand 'area' in our backyard that has no real definition where it starts or ends. It borders a natural area which slopes away from the house. It is large: 15X15 or more and irregular. The kids love to play in it. It has no cover as it drains naturally.
I have to shamefully admit I have no idea what the concern is with sandboxes and hand, foot, mouth ucler thing. I am too lazy to google.

As for your hand, foot and mouth comment -- that is a virus in the same family as chicken pox. It is so similar to chicken pox -- the blisters look the same, it just typically shows up in different areas of the body -- that it is very hard for a doctor to tell the difference many times without doing a blood test to test your child for immunity. Your kids will be exposed to it with or without the presence of a sandbox. So if that is your only reason to not get one, that's a silly reason.
