1st Trimester

I have a question about how far along I am...

I know I ovulated on CD 16 so I know I can not be more than 3 weeks pregnant right now but when I put in the date of my last period the calculator keeps telling me i'm 5 weeks pregnant.

Should I ignore the calculator or is this how its calculated?  I havent actually talked to my doctor yet...just been having the blood tests.

  • The tickers go by your LMP.  I wouldn't really worry about it.  The EDDs are just an estimate.  You won't really know when you are due until you have the ultrasound where they do measurements on the baby.  Congratulations BTW.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Preg. is actually calculated from your LMP the extra 2 weeks are freebies before you actually ovulate and get pregnant.  congrats!

The calculators start at the first day of your last period.

So, for me, even though I only ovulated - what - 11 days ago?  I'm over 3 weeks pregnant because my last period began on April 13th.

  • I am the same way.  No matter when you ovulated you always start counting from the date of your last period.  It is the same through your entire pregnancy.  So even if you ovulated on the 16th you count from the date of your last cycle.  That is why the calculator says your farther along, think of it this way your that much closer!
  • Thank you ladies!  I've been watching that ticker that tells you week by week what is developing etc and I thought it was wrong that it kept saying 5 weeks...I tried to change it but looks like it was right.

This is my 1st pregnancy (have been trying for 3.5 years...infertility diagnosed in 2009)....so I'm very excited and nervous about everything.

    Congrats ladies!

  • I was confused by that too at first.  Congrats by the way!!!

Actually, if you know you ovulated later it is more accurate to use that date.  Most doctors will still use your LMP, but it is safer in many cases to go by your actual ovulation date.  My doctor is using my ovulation date (I insisted).

There are many unnecessary C-sections/inductions done each year because based on your LMP, your doc thinks you are overdue, when in fact you are not...you just ovulated later.

In your case, since it's just two days, it's not a big deal.  If you want to go by your ovulation date, though, you can.  I am doing this, and many ladies choose to do so.  How many dpo are you now?  Just add 14 days to that number, and that is how far along you are :)

Then you are 5w2d according to your ovulation date, or 5w4d according to your LMP :)
