Anybody wean from paci? HELP!

I'm having a lot of trouble with this.  I tried not giving it to her last night and again for her nap this AM...last night she cried for about 5 mins and I gave in.  This morning I let her cry for 10 mins and I couldn't take it anymore so I gave in.

Any suggestions from moms who have weaned successfully from the paci are appreciated!

FYI: LO only gets her paci for naps and bedtime but I realize she is sooo dependent on it for sleep and I want her to learn how to fall asleep without it.  I want to wean now because it is getting to be more of a hassle.  If I can't find it in middle of the night, I have to spend more time looking for it and that means less time for sleep for me!  It doesn't seem to matter how many I buy--we keep losing them!  I'd rather just not deal with them anymore.

Re: Anybody wean from paci? HELP!

  • I haven't really weaned yet, but I stopped getting up and putting it back in because she would then wake and see me and cry even harder. The first time I let her go, she cried for about 30 min and that was all it took.  Every now and again she'll wake up and fuss but it only lasts a few minutes.  Sometimes, those minutes feel like forever!! I also put a few paci's in her crib so she can find one and pop it in.  Good luck!

  • I haven't had to do this yet, obviously, and I am obviously not at this stage, so I shouldn't even be over here, but I like to see what to expect in the future, so I look on the older boards.

Anyway, what my mom did with my brother was cut the tip of the soother off so the suction was different, and then slowly she just trimmed the soother down so that there was nothing left to it.  My brother (and this was years ago.... like 20 years) used the soother until it was so short he couldn't even suck it anymore and it wasn't worth it for him at that point.  My sister did the same thing with her daughter and it worked well.  It might take a while to get them to not like it, but if the suction is gone, then they will eventually not use it.

totally agree with the trim it down, heard it works and that is my plan... first pierce a hole, then slowly trim.  but, do it before they are old enough to realize a paci is "broken"

  • Great suggestion...but don't they swallow air?  Will that cause them to have gas?
