Healthy hot dogs? Chicken nuggets?

So I'm trying to plan this week's dinner menu for myself and the kids. DH is out of town all week. I am struggling with my 4 y.o.'s picky eating, so I thought I'd try to take his favorites and see if I can't find healthier versions.

Do you know of any healthy/decent options for things like hot dogs and chicken nuggets? Any other healthy favorites your kids like? Thanks!

Re: Healthy hot dogs? Chicken nuggets?

  • I just re-read my post and realized how silly "healthy hot dogs" looks. Bit of an oxymoron. But you moms know what I'm trying to get at... lol
  • My girls love Turkey dogs - we have them at least once a week. They also like to have hummus and then dip pita, veggies, etc in it.

  • Oscar Mayer aren't that bad. The label says no additives, preservatives or fillers. We get either the all beef or the beef/pork ones.

I use Tyson all white meat nuggets. I don't fool myself that they are homemade from boneless, skinless breasts, but they won't kill them, either.

  • Chicken nuggets are fairly easy to make- dredge bite-sized pieces of chicken in a beaten egg and some seasoned bread crumbs, then deep-fry. Okay, I don't know exactly how healthy anything that is deep-fried really is, LOL, but they're good and at least you know exactly what's in them. ;-)

As for hotdogs, we don't do them that often, but when we do have them I just look for ones that are all-beef with nothing funky in them and nitrate-free. We generally get Applegate Farms. They're expensive though, which is why we only get them a few times a year (generally when they're on sale.) We've tried the turkey ones, but my kids just don't like them.

  • There are turkey and chicken hot dogs.

Ian's chicken nuggets, etc. are hormone free, antibiotic free. Animals used for the food are free range.

  • We use the Applegate Farms organic grass fed beef hot dogs.  No added nitrates.

For chicken nuggets, you can get ones by Applegate Farms or Earths Best which will be marginally healthier.

  • We get "healthy" hot dogs at Trader Joes. They have no nitrates and are all natural.
  • for the chicken nuggets, would your little one eat homemade ones?  I make these:

But I put in about a cup and a half panko bread crumbs with the coconut.  And, the dip goes over really well with my kids.

  • Costco sells "Naked Nuggets." They don't have breading. You just spray a frying pan with a bit of Pam, plop the nuggets in for about 2 mins/side, and they're ready. They're really good, actually.

  • We get Applegate Farms hot dogs and Bell and Evans chicken nuggets.  The Bell and Evans are made with whole chunks of chicken breast - no chicken slurry.  But warning with the nuggets - they aren't fully cooked like most nuggets.
