NBR: Resume help!

I need some good wording for my "objective." I'm pretty sure I haven't changed it since I was in high school & all it says is "to gain experience in a professional work enviroment." Any ideas?!

Re: NBR: Resume help!

  • A lot of sites are recommending taking off the objective section.

But if you want to keep it, I'd suggest putting wording in there on how you can help or benefit the company, not just yourself.

?? Really? Thats great to know! Thanks.

  • I'm a former recruiter...hopefully I can help.  It really depends.  What kind of career/job are you seeking?  For example, I'm now an attorney and I know the objective section is typically not used for legal resumes, but it may be appropriate for some.
  • i usually customize it to each position I apply for and make MY objective sound like it is the same as the COMPANY's objective.

really rough example:  to hone my skills in ________ and bring the company to the next level of service... blah blah blah...

I was also advised a few years ago to get rid of the objective because everyone's objective when they submit a resume is to get hired.

  • LOL. Thank you ladies! Basically I was told of a per-diem job as unit secretary at the birthing center where I volunteer & where I hope to be an RN at eventually. I just want to type up a new resume but its been so long!

I agree with taking it off.  I was recruiter until a few months ago.  I didn't see very many resumes with objectives, and I didn't care that they weren't there. :)

I would skip the objective section then.  Good luck!!

I was a professional career/job search coach at a university for the last 10 years. I always told my students not to use an objective. It's hardly ever used anymore for a professional resume. It's redundant to state what kind of job you are looking for on your resume when you're already applying for that job, so it's obvious that is what you're looking for.

It's better to use a qualifications summary or professional profile section, where you summarize your most relevant strengths as they relate to the specific position you're applying for. It's very important to tailor this section for each specific job and not use anything generic.

    HTH!
