L&D rooms vs. Family Birthing Suites (at a hospital)

So I was researching what hospital I'd like to deliver at since I wasn't overly impressed with the hospital I went to with DD#1. Yeah, I know, a little premature to be thinking about it. Whatever.

Anyway, the website talks about their Labor, Delivery, and Postpartum rooms...you know, your basic room with a bed, sleeper sofa, TV, shower. And then they have one "Family Birthing Suite" which is a larger room, with a larger TV and best of all- a whirlpool. I would've loved that when I was in labor. So then I got to thinking, how much extra would a Family Birthing Suite cost? Is it covered by insurance? Do you "reserve" it, or is it a first come, first served kind of thing? Seems like it'd be kind of hard to reserve since you don't know when you'll go into labor. Hmm.

  • These are questions you`ll have to ask the hospital.  Every hospital is different.

  • The hospital where I will be delivering at, they have the suites and they're about $200.00 a night more than the regular rooms.  You do have to reserve them too.  I would probably only spend the money and reserve one if I was having a csection and spending an extra day in the hospital.  I think the regular rooms at our hospital are pretty nice too, and since my dh isn't spending the night, I don't need to worry about a bed for him.

  • Whirlpool sounds fabulous!! The hospital I delivered ds at had family suites. Labor, deliver, recover all in one. They also have another bed set up for whomever needs it. If those rooms are all full you have to share. I would think even if you made a reservation they really couldn't promise anything since you never know who else will go into labor.
  • I loved my birthing room for DD!  It had everything anyone could need and was private ;)  Only some hospitals offer this.  Check with all in your area.
