has anyone organized a fundraiser or 5K?

one of our really good friend's 6 month old son was diagnosed with cancer this past week.  we want to do something to help them with the big financial road they have ahead of them.  has anyone on here organized a fundraiser or a 5k run/walk?  if so, do you have any tips on the kinds of events you hosted and some do or dont's?  I am googling it - but want to see if you have some experiences to share.  thanks!

A casino night is a great fundraiser.  What I really recommend no matter what kind of event you do, though, is that you include a silent auction.  Start asking local businesses (and even some national ones) now - they often have to get permission from managers, etc., but most are really willing to donate at least $25 gift certificates.  HTH a little.  I have done several of these types of things through organizations of which I am/was a part and I am happy to help in any way I can for you to organize yours. 

On another note, I hope your friend's son finds success in treatment and that your friends have strength in getting through this unbelievably difficult time.
