1st Trimester

Can lower back pain be normal?

This is my third pregnancy, you'd think I'd be more relaxed about early symptoms, but I'm a worrier :-) I've been having a lot of lower back pain, from about 5-6 days before getting my BFP until a few days ago. I still get it, but not as bad.

I have a "dating" ultrasound on Tues so I guess I'll find out more about it then, but in the meantime I can't help but worry.

Has any of you experienced this? When I googled it, I only found it as a sign of miscarriage...even though in that case it is usually accompanied by bleeding...which I don't have.

Re: Can lower back pain be normal?

  • I had it, but I usually get lower back pain right before my period too. I was convinced my period was coming. I am almost 24 weeks with a healthy baby, so I say that it can be normal :)

  • This is my 3rd pregnancy as well and my lower back is already starting ache (one of my only symptoms) so it is very normal for me :)
  • This is my first, and I've had it on and off for the past few weeks... as long as your not having painful cramps or bleeding, I think it can definitely be normal as your body is changing...

  • This is my third pg too, and lots of things are aching ,lol, I really woulden't worry about it unless its unreasonably painful. I know my knees are killing me out of the clear blue which has never happened before. Just relax and try not to strain it further.

  • Yep, I had it for nearly 3 weeks - just before BFP and onwards. Your uterus has ligaments which connects to your lower back and I used to get similar pains/cramps during my period... which of course made me worry it was about to come any day after the BFP. However, it's all part of your uterus starting to grow and change. I wouldn't worry!
  • Thanks for asking this question. I have had a dull achey back and aches in my groin area? weird, but whatever. I'm not spotting or anything so I'm not too worried about it.
  • Yes. I didn't have it with DD but have with this pregnancy starting very early.  I asked my doctor and she said the same hormone that relaxes your pelvis can cause an ache in your vertebrae.  I guess it can start at anytime!
  • Yes, it's normal.  Depending on the woman, sometimes your uterus will push back against your lower spine and cause the pain.  I've had it for the last couple weeks.

  • My lower back tends to hurt in the morning.  I can't seem to sleep in anymore!  (Very sad.)  I have a retroverted uterus & wonder if that effects my lower back pain at all.

  • I had it last weekend.  My OB didn't seem concerned since I didn't have cramps or bleeding.

  • I've had the same thing! I think it's pretty normal, and like PP said I used to get back pain before AF pretty bad, so maybe it's just related to the hormones--I've also heard it can be related to the position of your uterus.

I wouldn't worry too much, I know everyone and every pg is different, but I had a m/c last fall and didn't have any back pain, but did have sore boobs, so you just never know!
