talk to me about cereal

We are getting ready to start cereal and I am curious how you put that in as part of their diet?  When did you feed it?  Did you drop a bottle?

Help I am totally confused about introing cereal!

According to my pedi, we give DD her solids about a half hour to an hour after a bottle. At the beginning, it is just getting them used to eating that way and checking for allergies, not so much for nutritional value. So, you don't drop any of feedings. Also, my pedi said that you give her as much or as little as she wants. If its not fun anymore, she doesn't need to eat anymore.

  • I was told (and read) never to put cereal in a bottle because then they can't say yes to milk and no to cereal.

We've JUST started PT on cereal 3 days ago.  We give it to him after his 2nd or 3rd bottle and only a little bit.

I mix up one teaspoon of the rice cereal with about a tablespoon of his milk (as per the instructions) in a sterilized bowl and feed it to him with a sterilized soft tip spoon.

They won't eat anywhere near as much as you make at first, but he's been slowly eating a wee bit more of it each day and enjoying it more each day!

Make sure they aren't too tired or hungry and don't force them to eat if they don't want to.  Make sure to smile a lot and make happy faces.

Like I said we *JUST* started so my advice is just from what I was told and read.  You do the once a day feed for two weeks and then introduce a second feed after that.

Also you should feed only one type of solid for 4-5 days just incase you need to rule out allergies.

  • We intro'd oatmeal at 4m1d. I gave it to him at night for 2 weeks (about an hour after his bottle) until we intro'd veggies. Then oatmeal switched to mornings. He didn't drop an entire bottle, but he dropped a few ounces.
