1st Trimester

what happens with the fat?

I was underweight when I was pregnant with #1.  I gained 40 pounds.  I didn't lose it all after she was born.  My belly still has a good "jiggle" too it and I hate it...  My question is this..what happens to the fat during pregnancy? Does it get pushed up, does it spread out, does it become unnoticeable? I have a fear of having a bulge of fat above my bump until the last day..someone please tell me that doesn't happen. i know it's different for everyone...but I am just wondering what others maybe experienced.

Re: what happens with the fat?

  • I don't know where it goes but I think all my fat migrated to my butt and thighs when I was pregnant with ds

I was overweight before pregnancy. My bump made it so you really weren't able to notice the belly fat, I was a bit flabby underneath my bump still but no one would ever know unless they saw me naked... well maybe if I wore something not appropriate lol. I was terrified of having a belly over my bump, but the bump came through and was nice and firm like a baby bump. :)

My fat is going all to my stomach. I'm losing it from my hips and upper back...all towards my tummy.

  • Glad to know that us larger Mommy's still get to experience the baby bump. :O)

The other day at work at co-worker really hurt my feelings when we were chatting about maternity clothes, she replied...well seeing as your bigger you might not need them. OUCH!

Hoping I get to experience the hard, round baby bump eventually.

Seriously?!  I think I might have punched her.  I am heavier, and my fat went to my belly first (so I had fat/bloat above my baby belly for the first trimester).  But then the baby belly caught up with it all and it turned into an nice baby belly like everyone else.  I too, like pp, had some fat underneath my baby belly, but it wasn't noticeable with clothes on.

  • I'm overweight (190lbs at 5'2") and still needed the maternity clothes BAD with DD.

Wow I'm sorry your co-worker is so insensitive!!!  Can't wait for you to get your adorable bump and flaunt it :)

  • I think its different for everyone... With DD, I was underweight and gained 35 pounds.  I never lost 10 of it and then I got pregnant with DS.  I ended up only gaining 13 pounds with him (even though he was bigger than DD at birth!!)  I was really bloated in the beginning with him, it went away completely at 10 weeks and then seemed to just fade into the rest of my belly growth as time went on.  At two weeks PP with DS, I was back to my #1 prepregnancy weight... so there's hope!!!  (Unfortch, I gained back 10 pounds over the last 21 months, so I started out heavier this time than I did with #1, but I am being really diligent about eating right, not going overboard in the least and exercising.  I haven't gained a pound this entire pregnancy, but I am definitely showing already and baby measuring right on track.)
