1st Trimester

Has anyone ever...

asked for an extra ultrasound just to get one? I'm not high risk and I'm not having multiples so they said they would give me the two ultrasounds my insurance will pay for. I got my first one at 6w4d and of course wont get my next one til 20w or so to find out the sex. I'm really curious to know what my LO is looking like before then! So has anyone got one? How much did it cost?

Re: Has anyone ever...

  • I have TriCare and they only cover 2 - one at 12w and one at 20w. They won't allow any extras unless you have bleeding. I asked if we could pay for it out of pocket and they said it would be about $200-$300Tongue Tied(!!) So DH and I scheduled with an outside clinic at 8w2d-ish for a "pregnancy verification" u/s so we could see the little bugger and make sure there was a heartbeat. It was $25 and SO worth it! It was such an amazing experience to see our LO and watch the little flicker of the heart. We have another appt for a "gender verification" at 15w4d-ish...that one is $45.

Sometimes it's more affordable to go to an u/s clinic - most cities have one where techs train. Try a Google search in your area. HTH!

  • I asked for one at 32 weeks, I don't remember seeing that it the cost was a lot more though. But i guess that does depends on your insurance.

  • Does your insurance cover an NT scan? It's a test to check for possible issues like Down's, Trisomy, etc...but they do an u/s for it (and b/w). We're not "high risk" for any of these sorts of things, but my OB recommended having it and our insurance covers it - and like she said, it's an extra peek at LO! =)
  • Do you guys have Tricare Standard? I have Tricare Prime overseas and have gotten an u/s every time I have gone to the doctor. I'm in Germany and all of the ladies I have spoken to have had the same experience. Maybe it's just because we are in Germany...?
  • I've gotten 2 so far and I'm at 13 weeks.  The first one was done at 5 wks b/c I wasn't sure how far along I was and the last one was done at 10 wks.  I do not think I will have another one until it's time to determine sex of baby.  Even though my insurance supposedly pays for my ultrasounds- I've paid $100 for each one... I'm hoping I won't have many more because that's ridiculous!  Especially with all the other bills that we have to pay!

I think your doc would probably be willing to do an extra ultra sound or two if you really want it but find out how much it will cost you first to decide if you really want to do it or not.  As much as I like seeing my baby- I really don't want to pay that much for the ultrasounds!
