Infertility

okay--new RE, new plan

I will be doing an IUI through an OB that actually monitors.  The RE that I met with (which is where the sperm wash will be done) wants me to do a clomid cycle this cycle before the following cycle where I will be doing the IUI.  I told here I have had 2 short cycles now (22 days) and she said 50mg from cd3-7 this cycle might show a bit of "normalizing."  I wonder if she just doesn't want my body to be shocked by it.  I don't know---I just don't want to take drugs that I don't have to.

Has any doctor done that with anyone else?  I'm Oing, but she thinks that since my post-o temps aren't that much hire than my pre-o temps, I'm not having a strong ovulation.  Does this make any sense?  Sorry, beer and half asleep=not so bright at this time.

Re: okay--new RE, new plan

  • so this cycle you are doing Clomid and TI and next cycle if you aren't successful then you will do Clomid and IUI?

Are these your first treatment cycles?

  • yes--I'm just at the beginning.  We are dealing with MFI though, so I don't know why should would want me to do a clomid cycle for the purposes of actually conceiving.  The original plan was first IUI during our June cycle.  She just mentioned that since we have extra clomid, I may as well try it during the May cycle.

  • oooookay, I get it now. Sounds like they're recommending you cycle before the IUI and try to get the miracle cycle since it won't cost you anything extra and then if it doesn't work move onto treatments.

I agree, MFI is usually not something you treat with the basics. But it probably doesn't hurt to try.

However, if you would rather just wait for the IUI you can elect to do so!

  • Well--I have tomorrow until I need to decide I guess!  Thanks for your opinions.

  • Karen, I'm still surprised you found someone willing to do IUI with your counts. I understand that this is your hail Mary, because of the IVF expense, but it REALLY bothers me that a doctor is willing to get your hopes up with a procedure that is highly unlikely to work.

If I'm remembering correctly, weren't his counts very low? I know my RE doesn't recommend IUI with fewer than 6 mil post wash because the research shows that they're highly ineffective.

it's your hope and your money, but it's concerning to me. It makes me question the ethics of the doctor.

    good luck.

  • Gen--his counts were low.  I think the first SA was 5mil (the nurse originally gave me the wrong info as I talked this over with the RE at the appt.) and the second was 3.4mil but was 1 mL less than the first one.

So yes--it is kind of a shot in the dark.  But I know what the odds are, the RE knows what the odds are and think we are better off doing IVF, but something is telling me to at least give it a try.  I really can't explain it, but I'm scared I will regret not doing it if we don't.
