Can dogs really sense pregnancy?

I've heard this before but now I'm wondering how true it is b/c my sisters dogs almost gave me away.  She has two little Shi tzu's and I was there seeing my niece and these dongs never pay are so hyper they are always running around.

They BOTH came over to be and layed across my belly...My mom immediatly starts joking that maybe I'm pregnant and I just laughed it off.

I can't believe dogs almost gave me away!

  • I took a test early because my dog would not leave me alone.  She was sniffing and licking my belly like crazy--it was so weird, but I think she knew!

  • I think some cats/dogs can, but I don't think my dog senses anything. She's just as crazy as normal!
  • omg how funny!

i don't know if its true or not, but my doggy has been rubbing his face across my belly lately and sniffing it as well. The worst part is that he sometimes doesnt let DH get near me without a few barks. It's kind of like he knows there is a little person in there he has to protect.

I swear its the oddest thing!

  • Wow thats odd! I don't know!

I did hear a story of a friend of a friend who the dog "sensed" that the baby was in distress so it forced her to go to the hospital and turns out the baby was being strangled by the cord!!!!! the baby ended up with mild case of cerebral palsy but thank God she survived.

  • I have a dog  but he hasn't acted differently at all but the two little ones wouldn't get off my stomach....when my sister was pregnant they did the same to her throughout the pregnancy...that's why my mom jokingly said that.  Little does she know :)
  • Mine know! My lab is usually somewhat of a daddy's boy, but he won't leave my side. Not even for treats. And he is normally SO good-natured and sweet, but he is almost "suspicious" of people when we go on walks now...he stares them down and grumbles if he thinks they get too close. My little corgi girl has become even more of a mama's baby. She used to not be that much of a snuggler, but now she lays on the couch with me everyday at nap time. She lays her little head on my tummy and just snores away. She also gives more "kisses" now :) They both follow me to the bathroom and sit right by the tub when I shower. They are constantly right under my feet nowadays. I definitely think they know something is up.

My animals haven't been acting any different.  I wish they would and stop trying to walk on my belly!

  • When I was about 6 weeks pregnant my dog started greeting me almost every day after work by sticking his nose on my belly and sniffing around really hard. We have a really tall dog, and I'm only 5'2.  He had never done that before, and now I just expect it almost everyday.

I think I will only worry when he's not doing it daily now!

  • I've heard that but my dog must be a dumb ass because he has never acted different.  LOL!

  • If mine knows, he should really stop trying to use my uterus as a trampoline.

LOL! That goes for one of mine too!

  • Mine have been driving me bonkers since my BFP. They are constantly following me around to the point where I almost trip over them. I think they know something is up.
  • My dog totally knows.

  • The weekend before I POAS, my Mom's dog would not leave me alone.  He usually doesn't mess with me too much because he prefers my husband but that weekend he would not leave my lap.  I think he definitely knew something was different.

When I'm pregnant, my cat is very protective of me.  He always wants to be near me and sleeps beside my head at night.  He did the same thing with my first pregnancy.

I snorted some milk out of my nose on this one. Good one :)
  • I believe they can.  My dalmation was always by my side, would lay next to me with his head on my belly, and very protective of me when I was pg with DD.  He is the same way this time too.  He is always worried where I am, follows me everywhere, etc.  I think it is so sweet and I love him for that!

Aww thanks...she was awesome wasn't she!!!!!

  • The animals can smell the change in your hormones.  It's similar to what happens with cancer dogs, siezure dogs, etc.  Our body secrete hormones (different types of course) and, when something changes, animals can smell it.  Whether they visibily react, and why, who knows?  My dog couldn't care less but my cat has moved from sleeping at my feet to plopping down right around my hip, half on me and half on the bed.

  • I can totally believe that a dog might sense that.  However neither of my dogs have acted any different.  Either they don't really care, or they are just too lazy.  I think I'll go with a little of both.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

My cat is sleeping by head at night (she never normally sleeps with me), she follows me around, she inspects me when I come home. It's crazy.

On the other hand. my other cat has NO clue.

  • I wish my dogs would act a little more protective instead of what they actually started doing.  Well, the younger one doesn't act differently.  The older one usually sleeps with us, but pretty early on in the pregnancy she started dragging my clothes out of the hamper in the middle of the night... and PEEING on them!  For a couple of days we didn't put it together with the pregnancy, but she's NEVER done something like that before, and definitely good about being housebroken.  Needless to say, she doesn't sleep in the bedroom anymore.
  • I think dogs can sense it,  but some just care about it more than others. LOL
