1st Trimester

help me not freak out ladies.. please

I just got back from my 2nd apt and he wasnt able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler. I am 10w2d (lmp) to 10w6d (ultrasound). We had an ultrasound at about 8 weeks and saw the heart and everything looked good. He spent about 10 minutes trying to find it with no luck, he then got an older ultrasound machine and used that, we saw the sack and a flicker on the screen. He said that is wasnt common to not hear it but that it was also very common to hear it... BIG HELP RIGHT!! So he change my next apt from 4 weeks to 2 weeks because he wants to be hear the heart beat to make sure that everything is okay.

How worried should I be?? He wasnt able to tell how many beats per minute (the technology wasnt on that machine)

  • This happened to my friend when she was pregnant both times.  The baby is still behind the pubic bone at this point so the doppler couldnt pick up the heart beat even though everything was fine.  If you are really worried, call and see if you can go in early for an ultrasound just to ease your mind.  Hope this helps a bit

  • I have been told anywhere form 10-12w is when you'll be able to hear the heartbeat on Doppler, especially depending on how the baby is laying at the moment.

  • This happened with me with my son.  No big deal.

My doc has YET to give a hb count at any u/s or appointment.  We listen, hear the whoosh whoosh and move on.

  • I had this happen yesterday. The doctor found it, but it was very faint (hiding underneath the static). She said, at this point, the baby is too small/hiding the right way. She got out the u/s machine and I got to see LO with a nice strong heartbeat fluttering away. My OB did not seem worried at all! I bet everything is just fine! : )

  • With ds we couldn't hear it on the doppler until 16 weeks because of how he was and how my uterus was positioned.

When I was just in for my 12 week appt, he couldn't get it on the doppler (though I could at home) because baby was moving too much, so he got it on the u/s machine.

I would try not to worry too much :)

  • This happened to me on Wednesday (at 10w6d). The dr said its still early to hear the heartbeat so he did a quick u/s. We saw the heartbeat and that baby was moving around. Dr. said that was probably part of the reason we couldn't hear it. From everything I've read and what the doc said, there's no reason to stress.

  • I wouldn't worry. Some OBs won't even check for a hb with a doppler until 12 weeks.?
  • They can't even use a regular ultrasound on me (has to be vaginal) at this point, much less the doppler.  Apparently my uterus REALLY tips backward.  I wouldn't be too concerned!
