Blighted Ovum anyone?

Hey everyone,

I had another u/s yesterday and saw two empty sacs. One was a bit larger than the other. I am currently between by 6-7 week. My doctor scheduled another u/s for next Friday.

I have been surfing the net trying to learn more about what a blighted ovum is and there is so much information out there - even information that creates hope like stories about misdiagnosed blighted ovums.

I still have the same prego symptoms as before (nausea, tender breasts, constipation, frequent urination, bad skin) and there is no bleeding. I was wondering if anyone has had this experience?

Thanks for sharing.

I have not, but I just wanted to say good luck, and I hope you get some positive news at your next u/s.  If you don't get many answers over here, perhaps try the miscarriage/pregnancy loss board.

  • I'm so sorry you're experiencing this...I personally don't have an answer for you, but you might find the ladies on the m/c/pg loss board to be a bit more helpful. GL to you!

  • With my blighted ovum, I had one brief episode of spotting, and then nothing for nearly 2 weeks before I really started bleeding.  There is always a chance that you could be not as far along as you thought, but that is why they will do repeat ultrasounds and should do combined bloodwork to verify whether or not that is the case.

In my instance, I had a series of 3 ultrasounds & 3 rounds of bloodwork.  The first two of each were to verify that there was in fact, no growth, and that my HCG levels were going down.  The last u/s and bloodwork were to verify that I had indeed naturally m/c'ed all of the tissue.

Also, not to scare you, but my doctor told me that in a lot of cases, pregnancies with blighted ovums often don't complete themselves, which makes a d&c very common.  This could explain there being no spotting if that is indeed what is happening.

There is a more detailed account of what happened with my blighted ovum in my blog if you want more specific details.

T&P to you!  And I'll definately hold out hope for you that at your next ultrasound, there is a fetal pole & all these worries can be for nothing!  Good luck!

  • Well, it could be that your dates are off and that's why the sac is empty. That's probably why they scheduled the other ultrasound so there's still hope! I did have one many years ago with an accidental pregnancy and I really didn't have any pregnancy symptoms so maybe that's good news for you. But, every body is different. Shortly after my ultrasound which confirmed the blighted ovum I started to miscarry. If you're not cramping or bleeding that's good news as well. Try to think positive and good luck!
  • thank you very much everyone and for sharing your stories. I did post on the other board you mentioned and I'll do my best to stay upbeat.

I'll update with more information as I have it.

If anyone else is out there - please do share!

  • Could your dates be off?  Our first u/s showed nothing and the NP suspected blighted ovum.  We had to wait the longest week and a half for a follow up u/s with lots of bloodwork in between.  Thankfully a little bean popped up on the screen.  My ovulation dates were waayyy off and I was about two weeks off.

     Good luck!  Wishing you babies!
