bad diaper rash mean allergic reaction?

ds developed really bad diaper rash a few days after starting a new formula and we're having trouble getting it to go away.  could it be an allergic reaction to the formula?  it's very red and looks raw, right in the crack.  we're taking good care of it and it has been going away little by little, but seems to be taking awhile.  he also developed a little rash on his body around the same time.  when i called his pedi the other day he said not to worry unless things get worse, but i just thought of the allergy now.

yep, the butt paste and now i'm using the walmart brand's diaper rash cream that someone gave me b/c it has even more zinc in it.
