we go to babies r us for us and buy the big boxes for ds#1 we get i think 156 in a box and they last a month or a little over and with ds#2 we get size 1 pampers swaddlers and there are like 215 or so in a box and i bought them the day i got them the day i came home from the hospital and i still have half the box left and they are each 36 $ its def. worth it to do it this way in my oppion
Using name brands, I'd budget $100-120 per month. Plan on 8-10 diapers per day, especially in the early days. Don't forget about wipes as well.
TTC#1 since Mar 2008. Serious MFI due to cancer.
3 cancelled IUI's, just about every test in the book.
IVF#1 - BFP! Twin girls arrived 2/5/10 at 35w2d.
Right now we are going through about an 80ish pack of Pampers NB a week and they are 20 bucks (the biggest pack of papmers nb I have seen were 108 for 29.99) so 80 bucks a month about.
I LOVE Target brand wipes though!! It's the up an up brand super soft and way better than the name brand ones!
If you are considering cloth, I spent about $600 total on diapers for my older DD. I bought fairly expensive CDs (FuzziBunz and BumGenius). Those diapers lasted from about one month of age until potty training (about 2-2.5 years). We will be reusing them for DD2. There is a hidden expense of washing and drying, but it is fairly minimal.
I would suggest cloth. We are estimating that we it will be around 300 for Lia until she is potty trained. We are using prefolds and covers. The initial cost seems high, but overall it's well worth it. And we can reuse the diapers for the next baby.
I recommend buying a pack a week through pregnancy and then on. You'll have a massive stash built up and it will take forever for LO to catch up. Just buy different sizes. We go through 6-8 diapers a day, so 42-56 diapers a week. At about $9 for a pack of 50, that turns into about $40 a month. Plus if Huggies work for you, they put coupons out all the time. And if you buy a brand that you end up hating, you can always take them back and exchange them.

I spent about $220 on Pampers for my daughter's first 2 months. She went through about 15/day in the first couple months (a bit more than average, but she hated being even a tiny bit wet apparently).
We switched to cloth at that point. I spent about $450 on a nice size stash of Gro Baby diapers, plus a diaper wet bag. Still loving them 10 months later. They are WAY easier than I thought they would be, and in a lot of ways, easier than disposables. It's worth considering. Good luck!
Everytime time I went grocery shopping during pregnancy, if the diapers were on sale (192 for $29.99) then I would buy some. Before little one was born - I had around 500 diapers (assorted sizes). This was a great idea, as I still have a whole bunch left.
nobody mentioned this in their post but there is a big difference between breast fed and formula babies, breast fed babies can poop every time you feed them in the early days, formula 2-3 times a day-
so breast fed babies will initially go through a lot more diapers

I buy Pampers and only spend about $60/month.
