When do you really start playing with your LOs?

I was going to try to get them on the play mat today, but they have been falling right asleep after every feeding and sleeping until the next feeding.  At what age should you really try to engage them in some sort of activity?

I started around 3-4 weeks.  Just little bits here & there.  She's not a great napper so anything to stimulate her and tire her helps me.

i pretty much just try to talk or sing to DS when he is awake. we have a playmat from DD but i dont think she really used until 7-8 weeks maybe?

I do this and sometimes I will shake a rattle and have her follow it with her eyes.  I read a book to her a couple times.  That's about it.
