Anyone take anti-anxiety meds?

I am seriously considering taking anti-anxiety medication, or looking into it, because at present I don't think I can manage it on my own . There are times when I am absolutely overwhelmed and am drowning in angst over the many "what ifs" in my life and it is preventing me from enjoying life at present.

Has anyone been helped by meds to cope with their anxiety?  How does it fit into TTC if you have or will be undergoing IVF.

Thanks.

Re: Anyone take anti-anxiety meds?

  • I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and PTSD my super-senior (5th year) of college. I took Paxil for a short time but stopped because you absolutely cannot drink with you take it and at that point I wasnt ready to not drink at all (bad excuse I know!). But it did help when I was taking, they take a couple weeks to really give full results. My MIL takes an antidepressant/anxiolytic and it really helps her but she doesnt drink at all! It has done WORLDS for her though.

  • I have been on several anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds. Honestly I hate the anti-depressants. They make me feel sleepy and not "myself" most of the time. I prefer an anti-anxiety I can take just as needed to chill me out, relax and then I usually feel better. Valium always worked well for me. HTH and feel better soon.

Thanks for sharing.  I drink very, very little and would gladly give it up in order to feel more in control of my emotions.  Although my husband was the one injured, I also feel I'm currently affected by PTSD.

  • I have bad generalized anxiety and I'm currently taking Zoloft. I'm seeing a therapist and hope that I can stop it some day.  I REALLY resisted (I had taken Lexapro in the past, which worked really well), because I didn't want to be on anything when TTC.  My therapist eventually said therapy wouldn't do much for me until I was at a place where I wasn't anxious about the strategies we were trying to implement.  At my initial visit to the RE he said to stay on it since IF wasn't likely to make me feel any better.

  • I used to take Celexa for mild depression but stopped as soon as I started TTC about a year ago.  I was on a low dose so it wasn't terrible being off of it.

For this IVF cycle, I started acupuncture and it is better than any anti-depressant I have ever taken.  I would love to keep doing it my entire life - that is how much better I feel.  My friends and DH noticed a huge difference in my general mood.  Acupuncture is $80/session where I go and I go once a week.  That would be $320/month - which is more than most 30 day anti-depressant pills.  Some insurance companies cover acupuncture.  Just another option to consider.

I take Prozac and Xanax for moderate depression, mild OCD, and mild to moderate anxiety (which is often brought on by the first two I mentioned).  It's good stuff & doesn't interfere with my love for the drink.  If/when I get pg, I'll stop the meds upon bfp.  HTH some - and GL.

  • I took Wellbutrin while in law school.  It really helped to take the edge off my anxiety with minimal side effects.

I have also taken xanax in the past to help get through some tough anxiety ridden days.  I had an rx for xanax before my wedding and popped a few that day.  I had a mini panic attack before my shower and my dr. decided xanax was the best to help prevent that from happening again.  I don't like it when all the attention is on me, I get all sweaty and mostly on my face and I can not control it.  Ick.  My mother also made my dad and I take xanax for my grandfather's funeral because it was just too much.  Xanax was only taken as needed.

I take imipramine, which is a tricyclic anti-anxiety drug, because SSRI's negatively impact my Corhn's Disease. I take a really small dosage, and it has honestly done wonders for me. You can't drink when you take it, but I don't drink anyway, since I take medications that are hard on my liver. Poor liver :(

  • I take xanax as needed (prn) which ends up being about once a week to twice a week when I'm cycling.  I stop taking it when stimming starts, per my RE.

I would certainly ask your dr. about it if you feel you can't manage solo.  You have a lot going on.  HUGS

  • I am not taking meds, but my husband is.  He is still working out the dosing and type.  The IVF process put me over the edge and I had to get a counselor.  She has helped immensely and I would highly recommend talking to someone with infertility experience.  Good luck.

  • I have klonopin.   It's a miracle drug.   I've always been a little anxious and I went through a really rough patch at work nearly 2 years ago and my doc gave me the klonopin then.  I take 1/2 - 1 pill only when I need it.  I can't tell you how much better it has made my life.  I didn't realize how much anxiety was impacting me until it was gone.   I take it very sparingly and not at all while stimming (or while in my FET cycle).  I also sincerely recommend therapy.   A good counselor can change your life.

    Best of Luck!
