My local news station reported a story tonight about the dangers of "co-sleeping." They were actually talking about bedsharing. I know there are many mommies on this board that do this safely and successfully. This was a story about someone who had a very bad experience. Anyway, through the entire story they called this practice "co-sleeping" when according to API it is bedsharing! https://www.attachmentparenting.org/principles/night.php I co-sleep, LO sleeps in a bassinet beside my bed. I also mentioned their safe sleep guidelines.
This story is in addition to a story they reported when the Infantino recall surfaced. They made it sound like ALL babywearing was unsafe. They showed the right picture to begin with, but I don't think they were specific that certain carries are unsafe, not all babywearing. I mentioned both stories and told them that I hoped in future stories they would get terminology right. I am so proud of myself. I wanted to write after the sling story, but didn't. Now after two stories that make common practices of AP parenting sound unsafe, I had to say something. We'll see how they respond.
Re: Whoo Hoo!! Took a stand for AP Parents!
The news everywhere is sooo dumb. Nothing is researched and the language is so imprecise. I am glad you called them out on these issues, the person writing the story clearly doesn't know what he/she is talking about.
Argh... NEWSSPEAK! grumble grumble.... It is everywhere.. no more telescreen for me.
Well it wasn't only my job as a parent, but I am about 31 hours away from graduating with a Journalism degree. So incorrect reporting really gets under my skin, even if I am not getting a news degree. The station is in the same town as my college, so many of these reporters probably went through the same program as I am completing. If I know the difference, they should, too.
