intro and ? for BFers

Hi ladies!

I've decided to come out of hiding after lurking on and off since 1st tri.   I'm 23 years old, I got married to my husband last May, and we had our LO, Ben, April 22nd.  I'm glad to have you guys as a support system as we all know it's not an easy job being a mom.

Now on to my question.  Whenever I bring LO up to my chest to feed, he always throws his head back and pushes against me with his hands.  He's a strong guy, and it's hard to calm him down enough to actually latch on.  Once he's on, he's fine.  It's just frustrating for both of us until he does.  Has anyone else dealt with this, and have you figured out a way to get your LO to calm down?  TIA

  • try expressing a little milk so its on your nipples, and put his head in the crook of your arm.  I have to fight an arm down every time, but I just tuck it under my arm.  your lo is super excited about eating!

  • I never had this problem with DD, but found that nursing her laying on my side made it much more comfortable for both of us. She is much more relaxed and so am I! After nursing her that way for a while, she became more comfortable when I had to nurse her in other positions when we were not at home.Good luck!
  • Also, maybe try a different position like the football hold, the novelty of a new position might change his habits. Is he crying when he pushes you away or not? Mine will sometimes push me away unintentionally because he doesn't understand his arms yet. If he's crying I rock him a bit on my shoulder and then just as he's calming down transition him down to the breast. If he's just pushing away because he's excited or playful then I hold him near the breast until his arms stop flailing and then bring him in.

  • LO did this in the beginning so we would just swaddle him when he would eat and all was well. Now he doesn't do it anymore.
