I'm thinking getting one as a gift for DH but can'tfind the answer to a few questions:
Once you buy a book how long does it stay on yhe kindle? Do you keep it in the memory until you delete it?
Does it save the page you're on when you turn it off? This may be a stupid ? but you never know.
Anyone have experience with returning anything to Amazon? It's too expensive to be stuck with if he ends up not liking it once he uses it.
Thanks for any info you may have!
Re: NBR: Know anything about Amazon Kindle?
Books stay on forever, you can archive them if you run low on space (not likely).
It keeps your page when you shut it off, or change to another book.
I got a video camera from my mom for Christmas, I returned it and got a credit - but that's because I didn't buy it. (used the credit to buy my PISA). Amazon's return policy is 30 days full refund though if you order it. It's pretty easy to return - you fill out online form and they give you a return shipping label - I think they deduct return shipping fee from refund total
Also, if you have an iphone or blackberry, there's an app which you can read your kindle books on your phone, not one for android yet, which sucks for me, but the iphone app is good.
I LOVE my kindle - I got it as a gift last year and use it all the time. You can even read outside in full sunlight - which is unique to the Kindle over other electronic items.
LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle.... yes things stay until you delete them. I'm not sure what the capacity is but I feel like I have a gazillion books on there and haven't had to delete any of them thus far. Yes, it saves the page you're on. If you scroll up to the top and push down you can ear-mark the page you're on. I've never had to return anything.
Friends of mine have the Sony E-reader and the Nook. Really don't like the sony, the Nook is a close 2nd to the Kindle the only superior factor being that I could use it to borrow books from my library and the amazon one can't.

Yes, it stays on there until you delete it. I haven't had to delete any books yet due to space. I think I have about 25 books on there.

Yes, it saves your place when you turn it off or if it turns itself off. (after a couple minutes of not turning the page) You can also bookmark places in books so you can just skip right to them.

I have never returned anything either so I can't help there.
FWIW, I LOVE my kindle. It has been so nice for breastfeeding because I just sit there and basically do nothing so many times a day. I also love the convience of it. For example, I keep mine in my purse so the otherday I was sitting in the dentist office and I finished the book I was reading. I just went on the bookstore and bought another while I waited.
There are only two things about the kindle I dislike. The first being that I cannot loan books to people. It is no fun to tell your friend about this amazing book you are reading and then when they ask to have it when you are done (which I would usually do with no problem) you can't give it to them. The second is the lack of backlighting. The kindle pages are "gray pages" so they look exactly like a book. So just like a book if I am reading in the dark or a poor lit area it doesn't work out so well. I bought a small book light from amazon and it works very well (LED lights) but it is still a pain to have that thing hanging off the side. From what I understand the reason for the gray pages are to prevent strain on your eyes like from computers and other backlit electronic devices. GL and I hope your honey likes his kindle. It is easily the nicest gift DH has gotten me.
I am lurking from 3rd tri but I cannot say enough good things about my Kindle. My Daddio gave it to me for Christmas and I LOVE IT! You can store up to 1,500 books or something and can archive when you are running low on space. It does save your page when you turn it off. I carry my Kindle with me everywhere and I love that. While I am waiting forever at the OB's office, I am reading. I seriously cannot say enough good thigns about the Kindle.
Also, DH and I registered for baby on Amazon.com and have had excellent customer service. We needed to return some stuff and had no problems.
I've had a terrible time with Amazon - I ordered a baby dresser and it came damaged, sent it back, got another, damaged even worse the second tme - both were returned and the UPS driver gave me reciepts stating the dressers were picked up, therefore they were no longer my responsibility. Two-three days later I get an e-mail from Amazon saying both items were recieved and I will get my refund soon. That was February. It's now May and I have not recieved my money, and now Amazon is saying I owe THEM for the dressers!!! I have reciepts and e-mails saying that Amazon recieved them!!!
I'm sure others have had no problem with Amazon and that my situation might be one in a million, but if you order from them I'm just suggesting you keep ALL records - reciepts, emails, notes if you call and talk to customer servies, etc.
I have the Nook from Barnes & Noble and I love it.
With the Kindle you can only get books from Amazon. With my nook I can get then from all different ebook store and get them from the library (mine offers ebooks to check out for 21 days).

my currently-reading shelf:
There are a lot of free Kindle books that are great. Most hard cover new edition books are 9.95. Books that have been out for a bit are around $5.00.
I love my Kindle. It is the single greeatest invention ever.
