Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I was just wondering...

Can babies choke to death on their own spit up when they are sleeping on their backs? My DS has woken up making loud choking sounds a couple times and I've had to quickly pull off his swaddle and try and help him cough up his spit up. It makes me very nervous. TIA

Re: I was just wondering...

  • My understanding is that is what they thought when we were kids, and is why our parents were told to put us on our stomach.

But newer studies suggest that babies will not choke on their own spit up and on the back is safest.

  • LO often starts to choke but he gets it all figured out. I always check to make sure he is okay, but he doesn't even need me to pat him on the back. I can tell when he needs my help and when he will be able to take care of it himself.

  • The swallow it, cough it out, or turn their heads.
  • my LO has done this a couple of times and usually turns his head to the side.

  • I am no expert but it is to my understanding that it is highly unlikely for a baby to choke while sleeping on their back. If my LO spits-up it usually rolls out of his mouth and onto his clothes. I know it can seem scary but I would think that it wouldn't be recommended for LO to sleep on their back if it was dangerous.
