Babies: 0 - 3 Months

hey bf'ers - when did you start to pump?

Hi ladies! I am happy to be new to this board! I know I'm going to have so many questions and they are starting already:)

I had little Gabby on Thursday and came home Sat. My milk started to come in yesterday and today it's all here! I'm feeling pretty full and Gabby seems to get a little frustrated when she fist tries to latch on.

When did you start to pump? How much at first? I don't want to increase my production too much!

TIA!!!

Re: hey bf'ers - when did you start to pump?

  • I started pumping at around 1 week pp. Just twice a day to build a supply. I never had any problems with oversupply.

  • I started pumping the day my milk came in...DS had a problem gaining weight so I used what I pumped to supplement after he bf.

Once he gained his weight I would pump when I could, maybe once or twice a day.

  • I started pumping about a day after my milk really came in. I was pretty miserable and pumping helped. She did have trouble latching on if I was to full so it helped her as well. I was pumping about 3 oz a time combined but it usually depended on how much water I was drinking. I tried to only pump once a day so I didn't over produce but if It helps to pump more often I would say do it, it will taper off in about a week. She is 6 weeks old now and i usually pump between 4 and 6 oz a day which I freeze for later.
  • I wasn't going to start until wk3. BUT my nips couldn't handle it anymore! I started on day 8. I nurse twice a day now, because after 2 days of bottles only he didn't want to latch. I have to say it's super convienent at night for dad to give a bottle while I pump, then we all go back to sleep in less than 30 minutes.

  • I started when DD was about 2 weeks.  At first I only got around 0.5 oz.  Now I get closer to 1.5 oz.  I'm hoping that it keeps increasing.
  • I started pumping as soon as my milk came in 2x a day to build a supply as well. It helped with the engorgement and DD could latch on better. And now I have a very nice supply when I return to work. I pump first thing in the morning and before bed, that way I know I will be home and not have to worry about when I will be able to pump
  • I pumped in the hospital the day after he was born. The LC said it would help get my milk in and also help with production since he was so big they wanted to make sure I had enough for him. I now pump usually once a day, sometimes I skip a day... but now we are bottlefeeding so I pump when he gets a bottle.

I started pumping 3 weeks PP to build a supply for when I went back to work. I actually pump at work for the next day so I have a freezer full of milk that I don't use lol. When my breasts were too full for him to properly latch on to I would manually express a little bit and that really helped.
