Normal? Three week old up for hours at a time

LO is 3 weeks today. He is only sleeping about 13-15 hours a day, and always has at least one period of 3 to6+ hours at a time where he will not sleep. He starts off alert and content, but it gets to a point where he starts to yawn, grump, and eventually gets fussy/starts to cry. After the first several hours it gets very frustrating because he wants to be held. I can't find anything saying this is normal or not. I hate to call my ped for nothing, but it doesn't seem like he's sleeping quite enough.
So it goes.

  • Hmm I can't say what's normal, but DS still slept A LOT at 3 weeks.  Certainly did not stay awake like that, usually only 30-45 minutes at a time at that point.  But that's just my experience with my one baby.  I bet he does get pretty fussy towards the end of that awake period.  I would try anything and everything- swing, bouncy chair, moby, going for a walk in the stroller.

  • I understand where you are coming from. My LO seems to be awake half of the day. Everyone always comments on how alert he is. Most of the time  when he is awake he is calm...but when night time hits, it has been tough to get him down to sleep. Sometimes it is not until 11 pm for him to fall asleep. I am pretty sure it is normal as long as your LO is not crying all of the time.

  • DD does this in the mornings. She's usually up from about 7:30 until noonish.

  • my LO sleeps for 13 - 16 hours a day, and has since he was 2 weeks old.

He has times where he is very alert (from 6am to 10/11am) and then gets tired and fussy. I try to get as much done while he is content to look around and lay in bed. After that, i put him in the moby and he is asleep within 10 minutes.

If i didn't have the moby wrap, i would get nothing done all day.

  • It was normal for my LO. DS only slept 9 - 12 hours in a 24 hour period. He still barely sleeps.
