Personal IF question...

My SIL is TTC with no success on their own for the last 4 1/2 years. She has one child from a previous relationship and he has a child from a previous relationship. They are thinking about going in for some IF treatments.

If you don't mind me asking how much did they cost you until your got your LO? DH and I both make very good money (SIL and Brother struggle a bit) so we are thinking about helping them out with the out of pocket stuff.

Any information you can pass down would be great!

Re: Personal IF question...

  • With all the testing and meds it was around $5000 start to finish.  We 3 rounds of FSP (They put the sperm right in the fallopian tubes after ovulation is triggered.)

My insurance covered some the cost of the testing.  We had to do a special infertility phone consult for prior authorization.

  • It depends on what type of treatment they will need. I did 6 rounds of clomid, three were with Metformin and the one that worked was with clomid, metformin and an HCG shot.

All-in-all, it cost us less then $1500 for the meds, tests, co-pay, etc.

Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!

  • That's pretty much impossible to answer. It depends on what their diagnosis is and what treatments they pursue, as well as how much insurance coverage they have. If it's a problem with him, it could be a single surgical procedure. If it's a problem with her, it could be anything from Clomid (cheap) to full on IVF (expensive). If it's a problem with both of them, anything goes.

While it's great that you want to help out, I'd hold off until you see what happens and get a better feel for what they're going to do.
