Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How long until you returned to work?

I was almost 11 weeks and lost the baby yesterday. I haven't been able to see my doctor yet (went to ER b/c was weekend) to see why, if she can tell or not. I still have had physical pain today and doubt the emotional will go away anytime soon....but my boss was like, take a day or 2...which I thought it didn't sound like alot, but really have no idea how many days it would take to feel like going back.

I only told 1 person at work and now my boss knows.  All family and friends knew about this, but at least don't have to explain to coworkers.  Was just wondering how long until you went back?

Re: How long until you returned to work?

  • I was 18w and took 3 weeks off. Talk to HR about FMLA if you think your boss will give you a hard time about taking more than a couple of weeks. That will protect your job. Depending on how long you are out will determine if you use your vacation or sick time or short term disability (if you have it). My company let me use bereavement for the first 3 days.

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  I had a c/s so I went back after 5 weeks. I should have stayed out longer, but I wanted to get back to work and start my new normal.

  • I was 20 weeks, and took 6 weeks off. I was covered through my STD policy.

    Sorry for your loss.

  • Hi -- sorry you are going through this and have to make these decisions. I only took off one day. We mc at what would have been 11w. I found that I couldn't stay home because if I did, I just cried all day. My manager is really kind though. She told me to come and go as I needed. I'm using bereavement hours to see a psychologist each week so that helps.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss. For both of my losses (8 wks & 6 wks) I started back at work immediately.  I would have driven myself insane being at home alone.  I also don't have to interact with people constantly at my job and I have an office where I can close the door when I need to.  You should really take all the time you think you need.  Don't go back before you're ready. Take care of yourself before worrying about work if possible.
  • I was 12w when I m/c and I took 3 days off, for me I needed to get back to a routine to get better.  I am so sorry for your loss, take as much time off as you need!

  • I am sorry for your loss.

I was ready to go back to work after 2 weeks cause I hated being alone in my house all day. But my work and my doctor would not release me to return to work until 4 weeks.

  • I m/c at 19 weeks and only took 1 week off. That one week drove me nuts! All I did was watch tv and sleep. It depends on how you feel. I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

I had surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy (and a tube) on Wednesday and went back today.  I just couldn't stand being at home anymore.  For me, it helped to be doing something besides thinking about the loss.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm not sure about with a m/c. I went back to work today (1w 5d) after my loss, and I had a delivery. I'm not in any physical pain anymore. If i am, it's very slight and nothing 2 tylenol can't help. I needed to get my mind off things.... being at homejust made me think way too much. I didn't like that.

That being said, I hated working today.

  • I miscarried at 10 weeks and didn't take any time off work and I should have. I would recommend taking time if you need it. Everyone is different, just make sure you take care of you.
