Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I don't think LO wants to nurse anymore :(

Since he was 3 weeks old he's been taking a bottle all day, but his last feeding of the day I would nurse him and then nurse him during the night when he wakes up. Well for the last week or so when I try to nurse him before bed he pulls off repeatedly and then after 5-10 minutes of doing that he gets mad and starts screaming... There is plenty in there so I don't think he's mad cause he's not getting any, but last night he didn't want to nurse and was still crying cause he was hungry so we gave him the bottle and he was perfectly content and fell asleep. But what's weird is that he will nurse during the night no problem...I don't know if it's cause he's half asleep and doesn't know what's going on or what, so I don't know. It makes me sad :( So I don't know if I should keep trying, or just give him the bottle to avoid him getting all mad? Has this happened to anyone? WWYD?

  • The bottle is just easier for him than nursing.  I'd keep on trying if I were you just since it's much more convenient for you and he is better than the pump at emptying your breasts.

  • My LO started doing this last week too, I decided I'm not gonna fight him and just give him a bottle.  I do still nurse him in the morning before daycare but other than that he gets a bottle.

  • I also mix bottles and BFing.  My LO had done this three occassions.  I don't push him but keep offering.  Sometimes, he'd start fussing as soon as I'd lift my shirt.  He keeps coming back to it after a day or two.  Good luck!.

Like pp said, it's b/c he doesn't have to work as hard with a bottle. Maybe he still nurses at night for the comfort. If you want to keep bf'ing, I'd cut back on the bottles if you can. I just read in a bf'ing book that babies won't "self wean" before 9 months. This can look like self weaning, but it's really just that he can get milk faster from a bottle.

Our stories are so similar.  My daughter stopped wanting to nurse [probably a little later, maybe at 5 or 6 weeks] but will nurse at night.  I think it is because she is half asleep as you suggested.  But during the day, she cries when I try to offer her the breast and happily sucks down bottles.   One thing that works for us is that I put a pacifier in her mouth and then slowly remove it and stick my nipple in her mouth.  It often works but not all of the time.  A lactation consultant may totally disagree with my technique but during the day it is the only way I can get her to latch on.  Good luck!
