2nd Trimester

Who has had kidney stones? (Sorry 4 the 2nd post...we have two of us struggling with them on here)

So after a long week with these kidney issues both OB and Urologist think I have a kidney stone. I was given two options today: 1. Wait it for it to pass and hope I don't get an infection or 2. Get a nephrostomy tube put in. The tube would mean I don't go to work and have a bag on the outside of my body. The 2nd option seems a bit extreme so I am thinking I am just going to wait for this stone to hopefully pass soon. If you have had one, what did you do? How long did it take to pass? Any help would be appreciated since I don't seem to be getting many answers from my doctors. TIA

  • The doctors think I may have one so they just sent me home to see if I pass anything. If you can take the pain, I would wait to see if it passes. How much time would you have to take off if you did option 2?

  • No idea...she said with the bag it is not ideal to work in the line of work that I do (with 1st graders) with the risk of it being pulled out and such. The pain comes randomly and when it does it is pure hell. So I go to work praying I won't have another episode, with my meds on hand. I hate taking the pain meds but sometimes they are needed.

  • I had one from 10-12 weeks. I ended up in the ER twice in ridiculous amounts of pain. After twelve weeks I passed the stone the size of a small pebble.
  • I had a kidney stone attack when I was pg with DD1.  I would get sudden, excruciating pain that mostly seemed to come on with standing.  Night time was terrible too and I made what I called a nest of blankets on the floor.  The pain lasted for around a week and then suddenly it just stopped.  It was terrible pain and I actually thought I was in labor when it first started.  The only medicine they would give me was tylenol 3.  It did nothing to decrease the pain and it gave me the worst heartburn of my life so I only took it once.  Kidney stones definitely suck, but if I were you I would try to stick it out to avoid option 2.  Good luck!

  • The tube is MORE painful than the stone!!! I had surgery to remove a stone, not while pregnant, and I'd rather have just left the stones in and chanced them passing. It was the worst pain related to stones ever. It was only in for 24 hours and I wante to die every second. they gave me high doses of dilaudid - a super strong narcotic that makes morphine look like tylenol and I was still in agony. I seriously considered asking to be put in a drug induced coma or for them to knock me out somehow. So my advice is do ANYTHING possible to avoid the tube.....
  • I've had kidney stones several times, but not while pregnant (knock on wood!).  I passed a huge stone once (about 7mm) so I would say just wait if you can.  I don't know how much pain you are in, but if it is bad I would ask to be hospitalized and pumped full of fluids, which will help push it out faster.  GL!

  • I've had one, but no sense I've been pregnant.  I passed a huge stone that had barbs all over it and I drank a ton of water and cranberry juice.  I was only able to manage the pain with tylenol.  Lay down as much as possible and rest.  Also I know it sounds gross but strain your urine too so you can make sure that you pass it.

  • Thanks ladies! I will definitely wait. It will be a week tomorrow I have been going through this, I am PRAYING it passes this weekend. I have put myself on couch rest with lots and lots of fluids. I do have a strainer which I am dreading having to take it to work so pray I pass this weekend! At this point, I don't CARE how much it hurts when it comes out... I just want it out NOW! I wonder if this is how I will feel when I am 40 weeks.. "I dont care how much it hurts, just get it out!" lol.  Have a good day ladies.
