XP: Fluid in DS's kidney during u/s in pregnancy?

I posted this on 3rd tri as well, but I just wanted to see if anyone here had experience with this during their pregnancy...I had an u/s about 12 days ago with a specialist OB (not mine) because of placenta concerns from my son's pregnancy and this one as well. Anyways, one other concern was too much fluid on one of the baby's kidneys. He said this is something that is fairly common in boys and he'll have me have another u/s at 34 weeks to see if it's cleared up. The fluid measured at 6 mm and was on the right kidney. Of course, I make myself crazy Googling and see it's a soft marker for Downs, and things about babies needing surgery after birth to repair this, etc....The dr. did ask if all my testing was normal. (It was, Down's risk was 1 in 1000, Trisomy 13 was 1 in 10,000 etc....) I haven't talked to my OB yet (I see her next week) but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience with their baby having extra fluid on the kidney. TIA!!

Re: XP: Fluid in DS's kidney during u/s in pregnancy?

  • DS1 had dilated kidneys on his u/s and still does at 3yo. We had some testing done after he was born and the pedi urologist opted to watch it instead of surgery. We go every year to get an u/s to make sure it doesn't get any worse and so far it hasn't.

  • This happened to us too. It had cleared up by birth. It really is very common and nothing to worry about on it's own.
