Trying to Get Pregnant

"Provera can make you ovulate..."

That's according to my OB. I saw her today and asked her why she had me start Provera on CD 3 for 10 days, considering it is usually used to trigger AF. However, she said that when it is given to someone with late O/irregular cycles at the beginning of a cycle, it "freezes everything" and once you stop it, it can either jumpstart O or bring on a period if the lining was thick enough.

Those are her words. I still feel slightly confused but my chart looks great and I haven't Oed this early in a long long time. So something worked and she said she's very pleased with my chart. I am supposed to re-start Provera on May 1st (15 DPO) if I am not pg (she ordered a beta hcg today and one for next week). Hmmmm....

Anyway, some people asked for an update once I'd get an explanation from her, so here you go!

Hmm I have never heard of that.  This statement is bonkers to me: "it can either jumpstart O or bring on a period if the lining was thick enough."  First of all, why would your OB think it was okay for you to get a period right after you just got done having one?  I mean, is she/he wanting you to be ON your period when you start Provera and then stop it- hence bringing on another AF?

I am just floored by this.  I have heard that Provera can re-set cycles that have been irregular, but never that it can make you ovulate.  Ovulation is triggered by a delicate balance of two hormones interacting with eachother in your brain, and neither of those are progesterone.

Why doesn't your doc want to try Clomid to help you to ovulate?

I totally understand what you are saying! I still don't really get it. She said she was hoping I'd ovulate, which I did. I didn't even know what to expect. I thought I'd get another period right after and was totally floored when my body proceeded to ovulate.

She reiterated  to me that with PCOS, Provera is the first medicine they prescribe, then Metformin. Since I do ovulate on my own, she doesn't see the need to put me on Clomid (I don't either, in fact, I hardly see the need for Provera but I am trying to trust her and so far it has helped me).

I hope no one on here thinks I am trying to tell people to take Provera if they don't ovulate. I just thought I'd share since it is a strange situation and I was hoping maybe someone else was in the same boat.

    Thanks for your input!

  • Thanks for the update.  This really doesn't make any sense at all to me...but what do I know, I'm no doctor :)  Good luck, and I hope this cycle turns out well for you!

This is totally not true.  Progesterone does not make you ovulate.
