Secondary IF

hi a few questions and a hello

Hi I have a DS who is 2 years old. We've been trying for our next dc and we are currently on cycle 9.  With ds number # 1 it took us 13 cycles and prior to conceiving him I suffered from one miscarriage.   Although I never had a diagnosed "condition" I did end up having some fertility testing and a HSG and I honestly think that is what helped us get pregnant. My doctor thinks that there could have been a very minor blockage and the dye from the test cleaned out my tubes. I conceived 2 cycles after the HSG was done.

I was really hoping (like we all are I guess) that this second one would only take a few cycles.. I know I haven't been trying as long as some of you ladies on this board but hope that I can join in and offer support.

Are their any other ladies with "unexplained infertility".  Also, if you don't mind me asking what is your reason for secondary infertility?

I haven't been back to my obgyn because it hasn't been another "full year" (I'm under 35), but what would you ladies do?  I know I am ovulating but that's about it..Is 9 months too soon to go in for a check up and to start some testing again?

Thanks!

Re: hi a few questions and a hello

  • My OB/GYN was only willing to take me seriously when it had been less than a year because I had 6 months of charts that I brought in with me. If I hadn't, she said she'd have told me to go chart and then we'd discuss it.  If you aren't already, I highly recommend tracking your cycle so you know when you are ovulating and how long your luteal phase and cycles are.

I was unexplained until my care was transferred to an RE.  Now I'm getting more diagnosis as to what the problem is.  Possible diminished ovarian reserve (at 33 years old), a possibly blocked tube and hostile CM.

  • Welcome.  We have MFI (male fertility issues).  It took 30 cycles for DS and now we are starting cycle 15 for this one.

When you went in for your initial testing did they do a SA?

  • I'm a newbie here too. We're going on month #10, and just started with a RE because my cycles have been very long/irregular. My OB wanted to put me on Clomid with no monitoring, and I felt like I'd rather jump in with a specialist than take Clomid with no monitoring!

We don't have a formal diagnosis yet, but everything's pointing to PCOS. We concieved DD on my second cycle off BCP (not even trying and with horrible timing), but I think that was complete luck.

I already had a yearly scheduled when I first brought up my ovulation issues to my regular OB, but I'd say it's worth a call to the RE office if you're ready. I've read that if you're under 30 you should wait a year, and over 35 it's six months. I figured that since I'm in between those, 9 months sounded like a good time.

    Good luck to you!

(ETA: I also had all of my cycles charted so that they could see that our timing was right and my ovulation was irregular. They didn't even look at my charts, but I think it added some credibility.)

  • I think that since you were in the stages of a work up with #1, you have every right to want to get started again---without waiting the full year.

I might even exaggerate to your OB that you have been trying for a year---what's does a few months mean really?  Maybe it is time for another HSG? They would probably start from square 1 again anyway.
